Two sources familiar with the matter said that Discord is exploring its options for a sale in the wake of interest from multiple parties that want to buy the company.

And one source said the company has signed an exclusive acquisition discussion with one party meaning it is in final negotiations about a sale.

“It is hard to tell the difference between a serious acquisition attempt and a fishing expedition”

Any potential buyer with more than $10 billion on hand to buy Discord is likely to be a really large game company, but more likely the suitor would be a platform owner like Microsoft, Amazon, Twitter, or Google. Some game companies are bound to be worried that Discord, which serves critical roles in connecting game studios and publishers with their communities, could be acquired by a party that would only be interested in one of those communities. Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment.

That opportunity is already there, matrix has tons of advantages that Discord communities would love. But there are a few things which need to happen in Element first. Spaces need to land, to function like discord servers do, voice call features need to be improved radically, and imo the overall stability needs to improve quite a bit.

hope so, but even a Matrix favorite like Element is not immune to these things:

2.11 What happens if Element is sold?

In the event that we sell or buy any business or assets, we may disclose your personal data to the prospective seller or buyer of such business or assets.

If we or substantially all of our assets are acquired by a third party, personal data held by us about our users will be one of the transferred assets.

There are many cilents to choose from. Unfortunately Element is the most full-featured right now, but I imagine that would change if Element was sold out. You can use Fractal or hell, even Pidgin, if you want to use a non-electron client.

You can even use mozilla thunderbird if you feel so inclined lol. There’s a ton of matrix apps even if some of them aren’t the most feature rich. Also a lot of the features aren’t needed even though they are definitely things I’d want, the base chat platform is still pretty good on its own.

This is the first time I agree to the excuse “there is always another solution” and I don’t know why

Because it’s actually true here. If we were talking about corporate software, it wouldn’t be, since that choice is an illusion.

And venture capital strikes again. Acquire users at a loss for years, then sell those users to the highest bidder.

I really wish we had laws that prevented this sort of mass data sale, because there is a difference in trust when your data moves to a new owner, even if your privacy policy always held open the option to do with the data whatever you want.
Or somehow regulate platforms in general, e.g. by disallowing the use of closed protocols.

Hmm, why can’t I click on this picture to expand it? Looks like something that should be added to lemmy-ui
