Yep, it was the API thing that finally did it for me, but looking back, I should have seen it coming after all of the other stuff.
Third party apps made Reddit a dream on mobile, a big part of its success were the passionate people. And they showed us all the middle finger

And how that slowly morphed into the AI generated slop stories about how one family member give the rest of them their comeuppance because the Henderson account valued results instead of random cheap business practices involving Sgt Menendez and his cheating ex girlfriend?

I should have noticed this earlier, but it dawned on me a few weeks back.
Caught my father in law who’s addicted to youtube watching a video about some WWII pilot that knew how to shoot at enemy fighters from his time hunting hogs in Kansas. It was entirely AI generated, the video, the voice, and the narrative. That person didn’t exist and it didn’t survive scrutiny if you know anything about guns. But damn the comments were just boomers gooning over military wank.

Is this a real thing? I can still access both new and old reddit via both mobile and desktop without being logged in. FWIW, I’m hitting it with Firefox + uBlock Origin on both.
Its been hitting me. Can’t use old.reddit without logging in and new reddit is an abomination.
I can scroll comments for about a minute before that pop-up comes up saying you need the app. But I rarely visit reddit anymore unless it’s something I need some information on that I can’t find anywhere else.
I had that for a while. Then yesterday I got a lockout message.
I get blocked now in a regular browser, but not in an anonymous browser.
I’ve stopped using it like this. Just annoying. At least lemmy has good clients

Yeah, I think this is a common experience. I quit a couple of years ago when they did the API thing, but the impression I get is that loads of people have been getting banned for similarly ridiculous reasons. Seems kinda self destructive. I left voluntarily, but I’d been there a long time, over ten years, think I had almost a million comment karma. This is also the case for many of the people getting banned - users who’d been there a really long time and who were mostly people who contributed content and comments. Maybe management thought they don’t need the old school users now they have bots, and bots that can slip in product endorsements and try to manipulate political opinion. In fact, a lot of the people who’d been around the longest and contributed most were probably more likely to notice and complain about the huge influx of bots and bullshit.
Still seems self destructive, though, but I guess after the IPO short term gains are more important than community. Their loss is Lemmy’s gain. Like you say, fuck em.

Punching Nazis is a specific thing that has gotten a lot of people banned, myself included. Which is weird because it’s something I’ve said for years, but I think it was after the DOGE incident they really started clamping down on it as “inciting violence.”

oh definitely, when I left reddit (ahead of the curve), I made sure to mass edit all my comments and posts and everything I could find one way or another, to leave as much shredded garbage behind as I could. But I still wouldn’t be surprised to find them analyzing the time of such mass edits and preserving a snapshot of content from a user before such an event.
Incidentally, do you know a way to overwrite you comments now? My 15 year account was banned for absolutely ridiculous reasons, but all of the options to blank out my comments cost money or require having a reddit dev account. Which, obviously, I cannot acquire.

Edit to gibberish, then delete. Sure they have the history, but it’s harder to walk back edits at scale than it is mass deletion when cleaning data.

I did not know what Lemmy was a couple weeks ago. Reddit pushed me out. I don’t want to be logged in or have an account with the way they harvest data. I got tired of weekly rotating ublock origin scripts and using incognito mode. You don’t want me if I’m not a willing data whore? Fine, I’m gone! I am now actively trying to NOT even look at reddit when a random Google search sends me there!
I tend to still get pulled onto it via search results when the stereotypical specific answer to specific answers are basically from there. But Lemmy has really grown so much since I first found out about it a few years ago (one of the big ditch Reddit waves of course). Still not at the “magical answer to the very issue I need info on” levels as subreddits, but getting closer and closer everyday. Also really cool to get and reply to sources from other Fediverse projects that aren’t Lemmy if you choose to follow them. Just so fun overall.
Its probably going to drop a lot more now that they require sign in to view once public, indexed threads on google. It was a decent repository of knowledge while it lasted

Good. My wife and I both had our 13-year-old accounts permanently banned with no appeals process - all because we share an IP address and they decided without evidence that we were evading bans.

Most likely they want new accounts with something like a phone number attached.
To my knowledge companies can’t force legacy accounts into providing that.
But they can nuke those accounts for ba reasons, with the expectation most users will make a new account.
Even if it’s not the phone number, it could be something in terms and services about selling data or advertising.
Like, it doesn’t have to be incompetence, loads of companies use incompetence as plausible deniability for something else.
