I know you know this, but PC RAM is useful for a lot more than games. Workstation PCs are where I find this situation really hurts. I suppose that to an extent, some of what you describe might apply to development and design tools.

Before this shortage took off, I got a rock-5-itx (ARM computer) with a whopping 32GB of RAM which was definitely overkill for the home server I use it as, but now it feels insanely decadent. I’m looking for ways to utilize it, like running Immich with the full AI facial recognition features and whatnot, Nextcloud with the full text search, etc.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to cast doubt on what you observed, just to say that using a VPN might introduce an abnormal circumstance. I am curious to see for myself. I’m actually hoping to find a different result because man… That is dark.

Go try it. Use a VPN to block your IP, make a brand new account from a brand new email address and pop on and off a few times. I gaurantee that their shorts section will show you little girls in bikinis or skin tight leotards doing “gymnastics” that aren’t actually gymnastics. Click on one of them and read the insane comments from men very clearly saying they want to fuck these children.

I might actually try this, but it’s worth noting that using a commercial VPN isn’t exactly picking a pristine IP address at random, it’s using an IP address that thousands of other people use for who-knows-what.

I think the lack of specificity in “US Government officials” implies national, federal government and not small town municipal official. Calling the latter “US Government officials” feels weird. I guess a federal government official could approve funding for a local government somewhere, though.

I have long preferred “natural” (“Inverted” in KDE) for touchpads, and the opposite for mouse scroll wheels. Until reading this thread, I don’t think I’ve thought about it that much.

I just experimented with switching, and I dunno… I might try using inverted for both for a while. They both feel fine for me after a few seconds of orientation.

That’s true, it is not legally required where I live, but it is still customary.

I happen to agree with your assessment that talking like a pirate when you’re being circumspect about copyright infringement is cringe. (Moer liek incringement, amirite?) I don’t usually love to make judgements like that, but man, so-called “pirates” need to lighten up. They think they’re warriors on the frontline of an important battle, but they’re just downloading anime or whatever without paying. I do it too, but getting all self righteous about it is EMBARRASSING.

Incidentally, do you know a way to overwrite you comments now? My 15 year account was banned for absolutely ridiculous reasons, but all of the options to blank out my comments cost money or require having a reddit dev account. Which, obviously, I cannot acquire.

Probably. It probably still feels nice to take a hatchet to it and limit reddit’s value to others going further. As anti-social as that sounds.

Not to take away form your point at all, but optical media degrades, too. Usually much slower, though. In the long run, regular transferal between backups is the only option. (In the long-long run, we will succeed in preserving nothing and all traces of our existence will be obscured! Ahhh!)
