Bavarian-based enterprise Linux distribution vendor SUSE is laying off 10% of its global workforce as a result of AI and automation.

SUSE CEO Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen sent out an internal memo to its staff that AI and automation are leading to changes in the industry… and resulting in a 10% global workforce reduction at SUSE. Those affected are set to be notified beginning tomorrow, 4 November.

These layoffs follow voluntary separation offers sent out in September albeit not with enough uptake to satisfy management.

The unfortunate state of the industry.

No, SUSE lays off workers because it has been purchased by private equity ghouls and they have been looking to flip it quickly this past year.

No, it’s laying them off because it’s November and it will juice their financials. AI is a convenient scapegoat

Always has been. It never made sense to layoff people because of AI, when there’s too much work to do, and you can always use the increased productivity to get more work done.

they’re laying off people who have little to nothing to do with ai – they’re expendable/sacrificial lambs.

The Yast2 GUI system admin tools made my transition from Windows super easy. It was like the Windows old school control center. You can change your kernel boot parameters via GUI, adjust services and the enabled/disabled and other stuff via GUI, add or remove packages with check marks. You could probably do everything without touching the command line.

A lot of that has now moved to a cockpit-client launcher, which is just OK, doesn’t have the same buttons and knobs as YAST.
