Because they desperately want to avoid a brain drain to China. Former Chinese nationals who went to school in the West and stayed in Western academia are already going back in droves because of, oh I don’t know, the full-on mask off Asian hate in conjunction with the blatant science denialism in the West maybe, and it’s honestly a matter of time before a ton of non-Chinese people start seeking academic careers in China too, basically a reverse to how Chinese people were seeking careers in the West (before the West really started going to shit and prompted a ton of them to go back).

I don’t really see it happening tbh. China doesn’t seem to be that desperate to grab any talent they can (unlike certain other places). Not to mention other factors
Its certainly happening in the UK; Our brain drain is unreal and China offers easy routes for graduates to go work there with flights paid + visas paid right into a job making 2k a month USD; which already puts you in the upper echeleons of Chinas income brackets.
I’ve also seen science jobs for high tech stuff (observatory operation) being paid the highest in China (talking like 500k-1 mill a year)

I wouldn’t be so sure. China has been gradually making it easier for non-Chinese people, even Westerners, to live and work there lately, whereas previously it was extremely closed off and basically no one could get any sort of residence. Whether this is directly in response to an influx of people wanting to move to China or for some other reason I’m not sure though.
At this point if you want to know anything about China without getting propaganda/unrelated bs tossed in your way, you’ll need to start using Baidu or Shenme.
(Western) Search Engines have become this degraded, my god. What the hell happened after 2015? I noticed the Internet turning into a hellscape after 2015.

It’s genuinely terrifying. A comrade of mine that is a Russian citizen also goes to my university here in amerika and their teachers called the fucking pigs to do a “wellness” check. That they are Russian adds an extra layer to this kind of terrorism and I have no doubt it is like this for Chinese students and teachers.

Yes, I never use DDG to search for stuff about Russia, but otherwise seems fine. Search results involving China are pretty negative, but I’d say that’s because widely visited English-language websites are. In fact, the Quora page gives a pretty positive view of academia in China.
