Nobody’s gonna buy it, but Motorola gets to say they tried and there just wasn’t a market for GrapheneOS.

For phones like these, which are primarily going to be used by nerds, tech enthusiasts and tinkerers, this is poor launch strategy from Motorola.

Most of the audience for something like this will be turned off by this and all the hype they generated will fizzle out a bit.

They should have started with a mid range launch first, get enthusiasts to rave about it and then upsell these extravagant features to less involved consumers.

Yep, I’m someone who was very excited to try but now that price can’t be justified. I’d rather just not even have a mobile phone or go with a ‘dumb’ phone for emergencies once the time comes for an upgrade.

      Ehh.

Best way to get over the idea of being a cheap brand is sell something for a high price that people actually buy, and on top of that hopefully rave about it.

I use to have used a lot of Motorola phones in my life with the last being a Moto G. Amazing phones. Features like chop flashlight and double tap to turn of screen were game changers. The speed and graphics were on par with what I needed. Great phones.

But do I as a consumer see Motorola as a “flagship” phone. If you gave me unlimited money to buy a phone would I go out and have gotten the top of the line Motorola over my S25+? It could possibly be comparable to the S25 Ultra. I don’t even know why I would need an S25 Ultra. But I don’t know what the top of the line Motorola phone is or was at that time.

This could change that. And that is what they need because they do make great phones in my experience.

I am not denying that having a flagship is good for Motorola or that something they can’t pull off.

It’s just that the GrapheneOS phone seemed like it was for the tinkering XDA forums custom ROM users. And not many of them drop so much money on a phone. 1500+ phones are for people who want their phone to be a status symbol.

Motorola isn’t a status symbol yet, like it was during Razr days. I doubt people who can actually afford this care about GrapheneOS or want to worry about a hundred things that come with non standard OS.

Signature is their pro max. Just wait for a new “edge” with GrapheneOS support.

Not justifying the price, its stupid expensive. But please don’t act like this will be the only Motorola with GrapheneOS support.

What is the point of a 1900€ phone? What is the target audience? How is it better than a 500€ phone?

Questions more towards Motorola than Graphene, but I doubt the Graphene foundation went into the partnership without knowing what kinds of specific phones would be covered.

In general, flagships get longer software support, much faster processors, sometimes more RAM and storage and usually better cameras.

In particular, this one seems to have a ridiculous camera setup with 200MP (remains to be seen if it’s actually great or just an inflated amount of pixels) and a 7000 mAh battery compared to e.g pixel 11 pro xl’s 5115.

And you can choose between 12 or 16 gigs of RAM. RAM is very expensive right now. Also promising a ridiculously bright screen so maybe this one will be useable outdoors?

Phones like these have features that power users love like headphone jack, expandable storage, removable battery, and repairability improvements. They also have really good software support too and a lot of OS options, such as both mainline Linux support and Android. And on top of that, a 10+ year support lifetime so you can really get the most out of your hardware. It might be $1000+ USD more expensive than the alternatives, but the freedom, added functionality, and longevity it gives you makes it really worth it!

Completely wrong target for GrapheneOS. The GrapheneOS demographics, which I belong to, isn’t interested in high-end phones. They want a no nonsense simple phone with lots of storage and security first design.

    • fancy AMOLED screen: don’t care
    • 5 fancy cameras: don’t care
    • super powerful CPU and GPU: don’t care
    • storage space: yes please, I have photos and music to store locally!

This will be harmful to GrapheneOS project. It will go like this: no one buys the phone because it’s too damn expensive and full of features the privacy nerds like me don’t care about. Even fewer buy the phone with GrapheneOS pre-installed and it’s a total flop. Motorola stops the partnership saying “we did it and no one wanted it”. No other OEM wants to partner with GrapheneOS after that.

Honestly, I think it’s partly that tech workers are out of touch with reality in terms of pay/income. I’ve heard senior software devs be absolutely floored / in utter disbelief when they’ve heard the average salary in my country – ppl literally laughed, thinking it a joke, because they couldn’t believe anyone could live on so little. They were making double the average right out of university. They have no frame of reference for people who struggle to pay bills, nor do they pay much thought to blowing a few thousand on a gadget.

A great photographer will have different lenses for different subjects. They will carry it around in a large bag. Many do in fact own multiple cameras too.

The most famous photographers who produce iconic work often master one kit.

Mastery of a tool doesnt come from constantly changing out gear. Theres a space for multiple kits but the point is to have less gear and spend more time shooting and mastering the craft.

If you lean on gear diversity then youre just sacrificing skill development, and thus. Its a skill issue.

Newsflash: The average person using their phone to take photos shoots different things and at different distances because they do it for enjoyment when the opportunity presents, rather than trying to perfect anything. There are people taking thousands of photos a year on phones, who do not purposefully master or practice anything. It’s not a competition, they’re not trying to get their photo shared across the entire world.

A modern smartphone allows you to have those different lenses available in seconds. It doesn’t detract from your time shooting, nor do you have to lug around extra gear, or spend extra for yet another multi-thousand euro lens.

I do wonder, however, which photographer will have one cheap lens for shooting portraits, sports events, wild animals and mountain ranges. Is that even possible?

2 have different optical zooms, one is wide angle, and one is “normal” and can take macro photos. On any given day I use all of em. The differences in photo quality and detail captured is very real.

Yeah no, even the 300-350€ (don’t remember it exactly anymore) I spent on my Pixel 9a were overpriced to me, I don’t even need half of the storage, RAM and CPU speed in here. We really need way less capable but equally as secure phones, who the fuck needs that much computing power to browse websites and write on Signal?

I don’t even need half of the storage, RAM and CPU speed in here.

This is kinda surprising to me. I constantly feel limited by the 8GB ram in my Pixel. I thought it would be a noticeable upgrade from my previous 6GB but it honestly barely is. Apps are killed in the background immediately after leaving them and tabs are very quickly unloaded. Even with nothing open, I typically only have <2 free gigs. Everything is very bloated these days to the point where it’s fairly common for even websites to consume several hundred megabytes of RAM on their own. Might be fine for some but I don’t see myself buying anything with less than 16GB in the future if I can avoid it.

CPU power is much less of a big deal, but Google tensor is kind of anemic and it shows. My phone struggles to even compute cloudflare security checks sometimes and apps take a pretty long time to install. Thermal management and efficiency/battery drain is downright terrible. Video calls absolutely kill the battery.

I don’t personally have a need for a ton of storage on a phone, but I can understand why people would if they’re torrenting or have local media, etc.

That said, I don’t really want to spend this amount of money on anything less than perfect. This thing is way too large for me physically and it probably won’t be very repairable either. Currently debating whether to buy a pixel 9 or 10 pro now vs wait for a cheaper moto option.

For me I’ve never noticed these issues on my Pixel 9a, but I really only use it for basic stuff. Still, you are kinda right, I definitely feel like Android, even GrapheneOS, is super inefficient compared to my 8GB ThinkPad with my own Arch-based disto on it, the 8GB there definitely “feel like more” compared to my Pixel. Battery life is fantastic tho, I usually plug it in over night with 80% left, rarely 60% at most when I used it a bunch during the day.
