  • It’s not that Wine runs things as an administrator

    yes, it is that

    Wine emulates the Windows virtual filesystem by creating and using a directory in your home (by default), which means you own the entire thing;

    I was always installing fitgirl games to my other drive, where I owned the entire thing. I know because I remember I set the ownership.

    However, the existing Program Files folder in your OS drive (C: by default, idk if you can change its volume letter) is owned by… I have no idea, actually, but it’s a system account, not yours.

    The last paragraph may be inaccurate, I was much less

    I have never installed fitgirl games there.

  • thats what the economics textbook says, but it also says that all parties in the economy are perfectly rational. however this is not the reality. they have tested it, people are already used to the high prices and they have no problem with it, enough of them will buy it anyway. the price drops from completely unaffordable 7x price to barely affordable 4x price, and people are already buying it again. if they aim for 4x price, they only need the quarter of the former sales to make the same profit. and if at 4x price the sales are the quarter of former sales, they could theoretically shut down most factories or production lines to reduce costs and in turn raise profits even more.

  • I’m the former, but most of that I’m not doing by hand. jellyfin transcodes when it wants, I’m not dealing with that. resources are monitored, a simple setup, so that if something happens I can look back why it happened. I also want alerts if something is predictably going to break down soon. with the latter school of thought, you wouldn’t know if a disk was throwing smart errors for half a year before completely breaking down. but I don’t have failover, I don’t have the hardware and don’t want the power bill for that. but I have reverse proxy because then every web thing is configured the same predictable way, plus I trust it more to handle the standards well. so most things I do, I do it because I think it to be valuable to me, not just for the sake of doing it.

    homelabbing is the means to an end to me.
