I think media that is creepy, wierd or gross need to be allowed to exist. It is important to be able to explore topics that make people uncomfortabe and I think that freedom necessitates the tolerance of works whose artistic merit is unclear as long as they don’t cause direct harm.
Anime doesn’t depict the sexualisation of minors as a bad thing. It normalises, relishes, and straight up comodifies it.

afaik, I can only blame the succession of pornography/obscenity control laws in Japan forcing niche publishers to evolve, evade, and move to what they deemed the less likely to cause run-ins with the law, especially the display of genitals and depiction of suggestive situations, so producing different kinds of erotica since the Meiji era.
It literally costs nothing for the author to make them 18, or 21, or 35. You just say a different number and make the school a college. They’re just pedos.
That being said i love anime despite my frustration with the pervert character, the loli, the 3000 year old vampire whos a 12 year old, the horny mom/grandma, and the useless male protagonist.

I don’t think kids as characters or even adults regressed into children is the problem so much for me, as the sexualization of them. And there is a definite issue with that across anime. “Fan Service” is a very real and often utilized trope. You can have all the cultural things people mentioned in an anime without panty shots and adults wanting intimacy with children.
Unfortunately since the pedo apologists defend the bad parts of this as if it’s just a “culture” difference, it’s hard to see any use of child anime characters for something like an avatar as anything but gross predilection.
I don’t necessarily think they’re pedos. I just think they need to grow the fuck up. It’s everywhere these days. You see the stickers plastered on cars. Half of Reddit (and some of Lemmy) are posts of artwork of scantily clad anime girls. Like 80% of the posts on the TopCharacterTropes sub involve half naked underage anime girls. Like these people have never watched anything other than sexualized anime. At least fantasize about actual women.
And I actually like some anime. Just not this weird sexualized girl anime that brings out the weirdos.

Idgaf if the character you’re drooling over is canonically X, Y or Z; if they have been drawn like a child then the artist drawing them has done so intentionally (two points if you can guess why they draw characters like that)
