2·3 months agoThat’s an interesting approach. I did try reading on my lunch break a couple times, but effectively I would only have like 15 minutes to read (and that’s if I skip lunch!). And if I have to take notes as well, then I’d probably only read for 10 minutes. At that rate it would take me months just to finish one book, lol. How do you do it?
I tend to read for an hour before bed, and I haven’t really been taking notes. I tried a couple times, but it’s not something that comes naturally to me. I went through school and college without ever taking notes either (in my defence, I still had good grades!).

4·3 months agoI noticed I was getting slowly burnt out on reading theory. Haven’t been as consistent in the past few weeks as I would like.
I’ll take a short break from it and read some fiction, mainly to keep the habit up. I find I’m less likely to want to read if it always feels like studying.
I know some people tend to read multiple books concurrently, but I never tried it. How does that work out?
When I start reading a book, I just read it to completion before starting another one, regardless of fiction or non-fiction.

Hmm. Maybe the core guide could remain comprehensive but have multiple “fast tracks”? Like a Marxist Feminism fast-track that takes only the most necessary readings from the first sections and jumps to a focus on feminism. Or an imperialism fast-track that gives you the most direct and shortest route to understanding imperialism in the 21st century, etc.
This might work with different target audiences who are curious about the ML stance on certain issues, but are not convinced or interested enough to do, for example, 40 hours of reading to understand why you say that the EU is an imperialist project but China is not.
I’m sure you already considered something similar, I read the comments you wrote on thinking about separating history to another list, but I’m not sure. Just a thought.
When can we pre-order the hardcover? I hope it comes with free shipping because it’ll probably weigh as much as a microwave.
Just FYI, .world users can’t see replies from lemmygrad accounts.
This is a good moment to point out that an open source alternative to Figma, Penpot, exists and has come a very long way and is almost feature-complete with Figma. It also has its own unique features.
I’ve personally been using it for a long time for various use-cases and I’m more than happy with it.

6·9 months agoI’m not disagreeing, I meant for The Principles of Communism specifically because it’s such a short read. If most people read it just once it would save so much time that’s usually spent clearing up misconceptions in conversations.
I wish most people would start with that instead of the Manifesto of the Communist Party (or “The Communist Manifesto” as most people call it). It gets through most of the misconceptions in a much faster and simpler way. I like that you have it listed first in your reading list.

7·9 months agoAt the very least it would get people to start grasping what communism even is, instead of them creating vibes-based strawmen in their heads that they argue against.
