How to pull in more users to the Fediverse.

For the average user

On twitter and similar platforms;

  1. Use your fediverse handle as your name
  2. Add your fediverse account link to your bio
  3. Pin a tweet that says you’re mainly on the fediverse platform

Less impactful but still useful to do;

  • Follow Fediverse and Developer twitter accounts.

For Creators

  1. You can the the same as # for the average user
  2. If you wanna go further, Create an your own platform for your community. It’s better to be interest-based unless that if you have a cult following. for microblogging I recommend Pleroma to minimize the costs.
  3. Promote your community platform.

For people who want to gain more privacy

The way you can contribute is to have your own fediverse platform and ask your friends and family to join your own social media instance.

Fediverse is better for privacy. but using other instances still means you’ll have to trust someone else with your data. you should run your own fediverse instance. for communications, I recommend running a matrix instance using synapse.

Resources
What’s the outcome?

If most or all people do this, people around will start noticing something weird like users having names that has two @. seeing this as something only the fediverse do, articles will start popping up about it.

Any more ideas?

if you have ideas on this to share, feel free to comment so I can add something to the list. I’m going to put this on the /c/fediverse sidebar.

Improving this post as a whole is a priority now.

    Also consider to join the SocialHub community as a member, and help evolve technological standards and ecosystem. Not only techies are needed to help here. We are in need of broad perspectives! Your passion for fediverse is enough, and there are many places where people can contribute.

      PS. You may like the Spiral Island Analogy I wrote as a way of storytelling how we evolve the fedi together to turn it into something great and beautiful.

      In general we need way more storytellers, who write articles and blog posts, and explain fediverse to other people in ways they understand. Many people have a hard time to grasp what Fediverse is, and why it is special. A lot of the apps and concepts are very technical and abstract still.

    Wow pretty cool effortposting

    but I wouldn’t have said to prefer pleroma over mastodon. Most work and cost will come with moderation anyways with a medium-sized community-server and mastodon is the easier to use introduction for people who are new with this kind of stuff.

      mastodon is very resource hungry though, especially for a bigger creator It’s better to cut costs on the get go. the pros with mastodon is It’s really shiny and has a better ui/ similar to other big platforms.

      I don’t know for sure though, do you think mastodon is worth the extra costs?

      I’ve seen this, but that this mean I have to trust someone else with my data. this isn’t the case for non-private people but still it seems un-intuitive to use a web service. is there a native app instead for that?
