comparing steam and epic is kind of like comparing good restauraunt to some seedy fast food place where cook sometimes spits in the food out of spite and you always get dirty plates.
Epics “free games” thing reminds me of a candy van. You gain more by staying away as who knows what the launcher does on your computer, they do have to make their money from somewhere and selling harvested user information would be quite neat way to make some money as a final fuck you if they start to go under. There is probably a reason they dont seem to care about making better platform.
