I came home once to my cat on the kitchen counter and my ex holding a spice bottle up to the cat’s face, cabinet door open. “What are you doing?” “Letting Max smell the spices.”
He was just standing there, opening one bottle, letting the cat sniff it, then closing it and putting it back, grabbing the next one, and so on. The cat just sat there waiting and sniffing. For over an hour and who knows how long before that.
That’s real love right there.

I see it as enrichment, like when they give bears at the zoo something to smell to entertain them. Makes my cat happy at least just to smell stuff
Agreed; I always let my cat smell things that I’m holding/working on because they clearly are interested in what their human is doing. That way he can get a better idea of what’s going on and feel like he’s helping.
It goes both ways too:
Ole time in my life, I lived in a house with cats. I got into the habit of showing whatever I was holding to them when they came to check if I had food. They’d sniff the thing, decide it’s not edible and go back to more interesting cat business.
Then I lived in a house with dogs and had to unlearn that because if you show something to a dog, they’ll probably just take it to chew whether it smells edible or not.

Sorry i know this is a cat thread, but my dog is a bit like this, except he’s decided he loves eating salad, yesterday he was begging for carrot, and following me around because he wanted some if my apple. I’ve created a monster :)
Ha, one of my dogs loves apples and recently took to pickles. I’ve never had a dog that was interested in pickles before.
Sounds like you need to start a veggie garden to keep your doggo happy!
I don’t think pickles are too healthy for dogs because of the sodium. You should check the ingredients first before you feed them to your dog.
I let my Willow sniff-test a lot of my food. usually I know he wouldn’t find interest in it, but I did lose a few shrimp to him one time
Tried giving a small cooked shrimp to a cat I once had. Proceeded to bat it all over the room. He liked the smell and to fetch it but wouldn’t eat it.
this is a game i play with my girl cat. the first time she encounters a new food and i offer it to her, there is a 50/50 shot whether it is going to be food or a toy.
it makes me laugh to see the gears turning. she’ll pause in place as her brain processes the new info, and then sloooooowly… either bite it or start batting it around.
cats are great.
My cat smells what i take out of the fridge, just in case it is chicken.
She also likes to have breakfast with me, and asks for some milk or cottage (this is a day each 2 weeks)
It’s even worse when the cat is being really pushy in the morning and demands additional tribute, so I let her sniff my coffee. That face of disgust remains funny.
Mine is just like this, once in a while she will nod approval before leaving, and you know you did something well.
