1·12 days agoSudoku’s origin story.
People have been trying to ascribe consciousness to machines since the 1800s and the advent of ‘calculation engines.’ Robots and Golems were physical manifestations. Can go even earlier, but those were speculative fiction.
Scrape the surface of anyone pushing ‘machines are like humans’ and it always ends up being a money-raising grift. Good luck with that.

A guy finds an old lamp in the desert. He rubs it and a genie pops out. The genie tells the guy he has two wishes.
The guy says, “I always thought it was three wishes.”
The genie says, “Check your pants.”
The guy looks down and says, “Woah, it’s huge!”
Genie says, “I’ve been doing this for a long time.”

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•California Is Exploring High-Speed Buses That Connect LA and San Francisco in Just Over 3 HoursEnglish
3·1 month agoThis bus proposal is basically a ‘back to the drawing board’ plan. How can you get people to travel between SF and LA faster than driving, and maybe cheaper than flying, especially if jet-fuel prices stay high.
It’s going to follow the existing roadways. What the original high-speed rail project could have done, instead of jogging far inland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_of_California_High-Speed_Rail
Given diesel fuel costs, they’ll probably end up with EV, perhaps with overhead cabling. And to avoid expensive ‘self-driving’ buses, maybe they’ll put down ‘guide lines.’ To be able to go faster than cars, they’ll have their own lane, or use center divider areas. And to avoid pollution and wear and tear, instead of rubber tires, they’ll go with metal wheels. But to prevent damage to the roads, maybe they’ll have to swap the guide lines with hard metal, protective lines…
Meanwhile, elsewhere: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed_rail_in_China

There is a long tradition in tech of firms tweaking their outputs to get higher scores on well-known tests. The ultimate example is VW Dieselgate.
But in AI, it’s easy to game benchmarks, by adding the best answers to the training set for the next version.
An even earlier manufacturer was Baker Electric of Cleveland, Ohio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Motor_Vehicle. They werem’t the first (EVs had been around since 1880), but by 1906 they were the biggest car maker, running the largest manufacturing plant in the world.
Main market was for those who made frequent short stops, and didn’t want to get their hands dirty hand-cranking the gas or steam motor starters. Their coupe model had a ‘boat-tiller’ instead of a steering wheel.
Jay Leno has a restored 1909 Baker Electric he showed on an old car show: https://youtu.be/OhnjMdzGusc
There was a glut of electric cars, then gas-powered ones with longer range showed up. In 1912, the electric starter was introduced for gas cars, taking away one of the main features of EVs. By 1914, Baker would merge and then shut down.
