I suppose I always took androids open source nature to be largely “theoretical”(?) given googles controlling stake and simply the nature of the mobile market where effectively every android device is running googles proprietary version. HarmonyOS is in reality in the same boat given it has OpenHarmony in parallel to HarmonyOS in the same way AOSP is parallel to Android.
