I’m going to be honest this sounds like it’s making fun of all the AI bros insisting we need to “pause” to consider the dangers of “superintelligent” AI while ignoring the actual problems.

A lot of people reading this are thinking they are going to charge you for food that you didn’t order. That’s not it.

Accurate predictions can be used for tons of things, like advertising. If they predict that you are in the mood for a burrito but don’t know it yet, they can push a Youtube ad about doordashing burritos, to get you to order.

At a large scale it can be used for planning and logistics. Prediction that Bob wants a pizza? Re-route dasher A to be closer to the pizza place so that dasher A can fulfill more orders once Bob makes the order.

Prediction that Bob hates big tech, would never buy premium doordash, and is only ordering today because he has no other choice? Deprioritize his order, he can get his pizza cold.

Except last time I tried to use Doordash and it took them two hours to finally assign a dasher to get my burrito only for them to message me that it was a food truck and that it was closed… It is a real brick and mortar restaurant that I’ve been to multiple times before. The only thing Doordash is good at is dynamic pricing and increasing the price on the menu based on what they think you will pay.

Then how come every one of my deliveries is cold and an hour later than the app claims it will be?

Yeah. They need to slow their roll. They can’t even execute on “give me exactly what I ask for when I ask for it” so how the fuck do they think they’re on some Minority Report shit for Chipotle? And they sure as fuck are nowhere near doing that without exploiting and ripping off everyone else involved.

Back in the day you got pizza in 30 minutes or less. Now it’s over an hour, it’s cold, and not quite what you ordered.

    Now get offa mah lawn!

If you deliver a burrito to my door and then tell me to pay for it, and I never asked, there’s going to be a fight.

I will drive my car through the front wall of DoorDash before I’ll pay them for a burrito I did not order.

The right approach is “whaaat?! You made me a gift?? Thank you!” takes the burrito and closes the door

I agree, I’m just saying if I see the bill on my credit card, there will be consequences, and if I can’t resolve it amicably, then I have a car that I’m willing to sacrifice for the cause.

They’re likely saying that data collection/analysis on customer’s eating habits is getting to the point that they can almost predict when you’ll be hungry, and the next step is to deliver food to you before you even order it.

If you order a burrito at 11:30 every day, their goal is to have a burrito delivered to your door at 11:30 every day, without you even ordering it.

Which honestly, is kind of terrifying. I don’t want a company knowing my habits so well that they predict what I want and then order it without my consent.

About 15 years ago when I was at my most depressed and least healthy, I used to get 3 pizzas every weekend (Saturday dinner, Sunday lunch, Sunday dinner) because that worked out as the cheapest deal. One week I only got a single pizza and the delivery guy commented on it, just something small like “Oh only one today?” I never got Dominos again.

Same thing happened to me… was having takeout Indian curry every day; skipped one day and they asked me why. Made it feel really weird. Like, did I sign up for a responsibility or contract to get curry every day?
