The problem here is that the kids are equating “coding” to “github”.
Which is a fault of most educational programs being ran by corporations (and everyone else following the corporate)
which is a fault of capitalismOh, we get you 5 dolla dolla grant. But you must sign up for GitHub, Slack, EasyEDA, Figma, OnShape. And then verify your ID, preferably with persona. Also, we store everything on Airtable.

codeberg and gitlab don’t lack the same social features.
Git cloning over SSH to some laptop you found in the garbage lacks them.
Or maybe microsoft should focus less on gamifying coding and turning it into an activity done for social credits, and make github more of a platform for… idk, version control and programming?

You need any GitHub repo I as a not even registered non user could download for you in my non VPN browser?
You get rate limited when not logged in. Stuff like looking at commit history can trigger it.
But this is to block abusive scrapers, I think. Pretty much all the internet has had to do something similar.
…And you can download releases or browse individual files just fine.
If anything disallowing anything just makes kids and teens want to do it even more.
