“BUT THE CHINESE WILL SPY ON US”
Have you seen what the Yanks have been up to?
At least the Chinese cars are inexpensive
It’s pragmatism, try it out some time
“BUT THE CHINESE WILL SPY ON US”
Have you seen what the Yanks have been up to?
I would rather have neither be using my property to spy on me.
Agreed - my point is that if both are “not great”, except one is cheaper…
China wins
China uses slavery and genocide to get ahead economically. Maybe we should be avoiding both.
I agree - got any ideas how to avoid that and still get reasonably priced electric cars?
America is out: “all you had to do was pay us enough to live”
Open Source! When you can audit the software you know what’s going on!
Didn’t Ford do that, like the literal company. China isn’t a car company and I doubt byd has directly committed acts of genocide so that’s kinda one up for them
Chinese businesses don’t get the loans they need to grow if they are not 100% inline with the party. BYD may not be a genocidal slave owner but they will support China’s decisions every step of the way.
They really did a min-maxed speedrun of capitalism. The rich get to be rich, the government gets to imprison, enslave, and execute anyone who doesn’t support them, and that let them undercut all the existing big names in manufacturing. I would bet that there is a Chinese manufactured part in every home in the world that also has electricity and plumbing.
That’s spot on.
China uses slavery and genocide to get ahead economically.
LOL… like Canada has not?
Then why are we not investing in making it ourselves?
Ask the investor class.
If any car manufacturer thought it was profitable it would happen.
if we waited for things to be profitable before making them we wouldn’t have the roads for these cars to drive on
You’re conflating infrastructure with consumer goods. Ask Stellantis how well the Dodge Charger EV is going (less than 2,000 units sold).
Because stellantis makes shitty vehicles in general.
So just disconnect.
OTA can be disabled by user. or, the SIM card can be removed.
Oh no, they will watch me driving back and forth to work every day.
the yanks already do
Or maybe, like Tesla employees, they’ll be snooping inside your garage when you and the gf are doing some naughty or illegal things: https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-workers-shared-sensitive-images-recorded-by-customer-cars-2023-04-06/
And like Tesla, they can record and share anything and everything they drive by - your bank, your church, your side girl’s house, your hotel, your office, your drug dealer… everything.
This paranoia is driven by people who think they are so exceptional that foreign governments need to watch them all day.
If this bothers you, put tape over the cameras or pull the SIM card.
Like most EVs, I assume the Chinese will have over the air connections (ostensibly for “updates”) so good luck with ‘pulling the SIM card’
Any programmer worth his salt is going to have a “Your cameras appear to be dirty, please clean them before engaging Drive function” error message.
I dont think Im exceptional enough to follow. I DO think AI is powerful enough to follow EVERYONE and collate all our data for foreign intelligence.
Jesus fuck, this is the shit I heard back around 2006 wrt Facebook.
and in 20 years, nothing has happened. Maybe I’m just not important.
Should BYD vehicles be allowed on military bases, or carrying federal employees?
And to which work and when you don’t etc. they can derive meaningful information from the patterns they capture and you have never thought what they can know from the combined data they collect, have you? Seriously, this abrogation of responsibility from users is why tech fascism is unfolding.
Canadians buy 2M vehicles a year. This deal only allows in 50,000.
When Xpeng wanted to sell in EU, they had to assemble the cars in Austria with Canada’s Magna.
So why is Magna making Chinese EVs in Austria, but not in Canada?
According to Statistics Canada, 264,000 EV’s were sold in 2024.
50,000 of those potentially being Chinese EVs is not a small percentage. That is a significant chunk of our yearly EV sales.
The only reason why EV sales are not higher is we only get overpriced Nazi garbage for the most part.
No. There are genuine problems with EVs in the kind of cold and snow Canada sees in the heartland and up north. But you’ll see lots of EVs in Vancouver, where weather is moderate.
there are tons of EVs in Southern Ontario.
50000 on year one. More later
cause EU is better at negotiating I guess
Assembled in Australis is like saying your ikea furniture was manufactured in your living room.
is like saying your ikea furniture was manufactured in your living room.
JFC Lemmy…
Walk around an ikea. Look at the labels, most of the large furniture pieces are made locally in the same province they are sold.
That wasn’t my point. My point was when you bring the Ikea boxes home and assemble them, that doesn’t make you a manufacturer. That’s the case in Australia, the cars are assembled in Australia like Ikea furniture.
Are there previous of what models will be available? I’m guessing due to quota it will be their higher end ones.
It’s going to be BYD, but not sure which models. A lot of theirs are quite affordable though.
They also make $80k (in China) Bugatti or Rolls Royce like VIP cars. They would sell out (quota) too quickly at $50k models.
I guess we’ll see soon, the quotas might push them towards higher end cars. But in the grand scheme of things it’s really going to be peanuts either way for a company the size of BYD. Their main goal is likely to just get a foothold in Canada for the long term.
I’m not looking forward to China’s increased influence over Canada, though.
I am because it would certainly be a lot better if people in Canada had exposure to Chinese views instead of living in a bubble of American propaganda.
Like there’s only two choices…you’re a site wide Chinese propagandist, your opinion is worthless.
I never said there were two choices. I merely pointed out that it’s good for people to be exposed to different views. Life’s gonna get real hard for trolls like you because the world as changing, and even Canada has to rethink its racist ways now. Enjoy seething and coping, you’ll be doing a lot of that going forward.
I hope that Stellantis will start manufacturing the EVs here.
Stellantis makes the incredibly terrible Dodge Charger in Ontario. No one is buying them. Stellantis has no idea how to make cars.
That will never happen. There’s no business case for it.
The Dodge Charger EV is made in Ontario.
Recent numbers say 1,947 Dodge Charger EV’s were sold. BYD sold 431K+. Why would BYD build a manufacturing plant in Canada?
https://www.theautopian.com/dodge-now-sells-way-more-electric-chargers-than-gas-powered-ones/
Why would BYD build a manufacturing plant in Canada?
To avoid tariffs, the same reason Xpeng builds cars in Austria for the EU. Dodge only sold 1900 Charger EVs because they are horrible cars and overpriced.
Or China could just say ‘remove tariffs or we don’t buy your canola.’
