Having them pointed towards lemmy.ml is a little concerning.
To be fair, it was apparently posted in r/anarchocommunism, so I’d just chalk it up to knowing your audience. At least it was just .ml, and not grad or hexbear!
I’d say that’s even more tone-deaf then. Anarchists hate tankies.
Not always, IRL they seem to get along pretty well
More than a little concerning, it’s happened plenty of times before. People see that BS on the Tankie Triad and then leave thinking Lemmy is just a bunch of tankies
Sometimes they try another non-Tankie instance and realize that we’re not all like that, but I’m sure a majority never return always thinking that all of Lemmy is “that Tankie hangout” or worse, a Voat 2.0
Capitalism destroyed our government, captured our constitution, and is literally ending the world (for humans, don’t worry it’ll be fine in a few million years and it’ll be like we never existed, thank goodness for that).
I find comedy in people likely here due to the greed rot of Spez wanting to go public and now fondling billionaire balls still, here on Lemmy like digital refugees in the wake of capitalism breaking promises to and destroying a community to increase private profit, going “ewww commies and socialists.”
Credit where it’s due, the capitalist’s Orwell game is God tier.
No, we are going “ewww tankies”
Just FYI, you can be anti-capitalist without being a tankie.
Communism doesn’t have to be authoritarian.
.ml would be worse than Reddit if they had the same number of users.
I mean they are annoying
Whatever, infighting gets us nowhere , down with the big bad
Who cares, just get them onboarded and we can deal with orientation later
Because they’ll onboard see the Tankie bullshit and go “oh it’s just Voat 2.0 :/” and leave before ever making it to orientation
I think you’re overestimating the repulsion/ attraction of the tankies. Besides, there’s more to .ml than a love of authoritarian socialism (i assume)
Besides, there’s more to .ml than a love of authoritarian
Not really, back in the day yea, but over the past year as other comm’s have grown on other instances their influence has been waning and all that’s left is the Tankie ideology
Programming.dev has taken over for FOSS and programming topics in general, other instances are taking over memes, and I’m even seeing more and more non-.ml privacy subs rise
If you look at MAUs, even the .ml memes comm (once THE most popular comm) doesn’t crack the top 10 anymore. Not a single .ml comm does
Not really. I mean they do discuss other topics but the ideology flows through everything there.
i left yesterday after 12 years. joined lemmy. the internet was a lot cooler before it was run by billionaires and ass kissers who are intimidated by billionaires.
fuck em all
i left yesterday after 12 years. joined lemmy.
Welcome!
Here’s your welcome-possum:
I thought we do welcome beans?
Welcome!
Welcome, glad you could make it! I hope you find this to be a cool place.
For best results, subscribe to communities you want to have a dedicated feed for, and block communities, instances and users that aren’t worth your time, since there is the occasional jerk like you might find anywhere on the internet.
since there is the occasional jerk like you
Hey!
might find anywhere on the internet.
Oh.
I’m going to repeat what I’ve been saying a lot lately. The default is “active.” If that gets boring (it probably will), switch to “hot,” “new,” and “top 6 hours” to get a more vibrant experience. The search engine is confusing at first, but is pretty good.
Welcome!
The web UI is accessible on any device and there are plenty of apps as well such as Sync and Voyager.
Jerboa has treated me well. I tried others but Jerboa is similar to Baconreader which is what I used in the olden times
Fellow baconreader refugee here. I use Jeboa and Eternity alternatingly. They were both good and I was never able to choose. baconreader was a great tool for research into other peoples experiences, knowledge, and opinions. Also the memes etc. I’m glad threaded convos live on via Lemmy.
Welcome!
Excellent. Every long term power redditor exiting is a good blow to reddit. They’re left with all the lurkers who just want to consume content so they’ll have to rely more and more on ai slop until people realize it’s all fake.
My account is 14 years old, and I’m almost to the my line where I’m going to torch it. The censorship is getting bad!
I do miss the Reddit from 10-14 years ago. So sad that it’s gone. It was truly amazing.
Well you’re in a good spot. Lemmy is like reddit 14 years ago 😅
You kept your account for 14 years? I always deleted my accounts after some time. Longest one was for almost 3 years I think.
Mine is 16 yo by now I think. I don’t delete it as it’s historical enough not to get auto banned when doing agitation for lemmy over there.
Yeah, but I’ve cleaned it out a few times over the years.
I found all the automated tools don’t work anymore. It took me 3 hours to manually delete all my content before I i deleted my account. Good luck.
Oh damn, shreddit doesn’t work any longer?
You can also keep your account to talk about Lemmy
That’s the trick. Historical accounts are valuable to avoid automated bans when posting lemmy links.
It did not when I tried it. Deleted like 10 things then stopped and never would work again.
Damn
What up big dog
So nice that radical activism only requires I switch apps 🥳
Yeah this thing is worded so strong for what it is
I don’t know how the French are able to rally in real life and put everything on the line to push back fascism. I know I should do something real to fight back, but like, I’ve got a lot going on ya know? Maybe I’ll be rallied by the time atrocities have already happened, but I hope not.
We have unions, a variety of political parties and many organisations who have decades, even a century of experience on how to organise rallyes. The only thing common people have to do it show up. And still, most French won’t go even if they sympathise with the message (I almost never do it).
The main difference being that France is 248,573 mi² (643,801 km2)
The contiguous United States is 3,119,000 mi² (8,080,464.3 km²)
France also has a 3.5x higher population density
Inhabitants/km²
-
France: 124.4
-
United States: 35.2
The country’s population density doesn’t change anything to protest, it’s a cultural thing. People only live in cities anyway why would having huge empty fields affect protests ?
And there are plenty of denser countries which fight way less.

I saw a post on here the other day where someone was complaining that their coworkers “don’t care” about the current political climate and after they elaborated, they were describing people who do care but weren’t actively spearheading a demonstration. I don’t know if they expect them to go stand in traffic or what.
I give monthly donations to nonprofits that I like and email my state representatives when EFF or Fight for the Future tells me to but I’ve also got a life to live. Just stay informed, vote/petition, donate if you can, but live your life. You can only do so much.
I appreciate reminding me that taking the most extreme action is not the only way to respond here. It’s hard to not see Luigi and immediately think ‘that’s actually doing something right there!’ being engaged counts
Plot twist: it’s a ploy by reddit to get extremists off their platform and on to Lemmy
It’s a plot twist to overload the servers of single instances.
.world straight up blocks /c/piracy and “preemptively” blocked hexbear.
They blocked piracy for like a day over a year ago and then unblocked it when the users were clearly against it.
Hexbear being blocked is a good thing and overwhelmingly supported by the users.
They blocked piracy for like a day over a year ago and then unblocked
Still blocked for me. Every time I click !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com returns a “couldnt_find_community” error message.
I’m a .world user:
You’re loading into the main dbzero webpage, not pulling the data into your .world instance.
Here is what I see on my end:
- blocking hexbear is a good idea
world unblocked priacy instances over a year agowith the notable exception of the db0 instance
lemmy.dbzer0.com then? 😎
So they took the initiative to stop Hexbear brigading and spamming their authoritarian bootlicking on their instance? Good choice.
They should really include the no ads thing. I think it’s a great selling point, and it would be useful to leverage.
While this is true some instances do need donations it’s very probable that some instances could include ads in the future.
Totally fair, but at the moment, there are none. And even if instances will start using 3rd party ads, there will also be instances that will never run ads. The power of federation at work.
It’s a little bit dramatic, it’s a little bit wordy.
Yup, it probably is a genuine thing from the source: certainly, it was written by a redditor.“Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Yeah, this is a terminally online manifesto that I couldn’t even get through. It’s roleplay and storytelling, which is what our species is great at, but it doesn’t connect with reality beyond that.
Look guys, if you want to engage in some kind of organized social action that will actually make a difference, turn off social media entirely. You moving from reddit to lemmy feels good in a micro-narrative, but nobody cares, it won’t change anything for anyone. It’s not bad, but it’s not some heroic action either.
You can do so, so much more for the causes you care about by GOING THE FUCK OUTSIDE.
I think that you can leave reddit and do other meaningful things as well. In fact it might even help you do so. And being a little dramatic might just be what some people need as a push to do it. I didn’t get through all of this either, but then I have already left there.
You can do so, so much more for the causes you care about by GOING THE FUCK OUTSIDE.
I mean…it all starts with communication, right?
This platform is a source for communication. One that isn’t affected by corporate goons and Nazis the way Reddit is. The internet is literally the most effective form of communication if used properly. Yeah, you eventually have to go outside and get dirty, but it starts places like this.
We shouldn’t be putting this post down. It’s not productive.
lemmy . ml sucks too, btw… this little flyer leads people straight into the worst instance… one that’s essentially only chinese communist propaganda
im kind of embarrassed by how cringe this is and i really hope they dont represent the fediverse
I, uh, upvoted the post and reversed it.
Fucking sends people to .ml specifically. Whoosh.
In this moment, I am euphoric…
-Aalewis
I despise the way cringe gets used like this, and I still agree 100% with you
revolutions are born in monents like these
Holy shit can this whole thing be any more corny? Is this done by teenagers? Don’t get me wrong fuck Musk/reddit/etc. but what is even the outrage about this time?
Subreddits are being banned and important information being hindered from being seen. It may be corny to you but at least they’re trying. What have you done?
I’m not sure if I share the exact same sentiment as @mint_tamas@lemmy.world, but I honestly did have the thought of, “Who (or For Whom), does this format work for anymore?”
Like I get it, it’s classical and all. A call back to a historic time where action was taken (just don’t look into it too hard, you’ll get disappointed if you learn outside the “Americuh” version). But, now it just feels a little … disingenuous? Idk the exact word/feeling, maybe because it’s been co-opted by so many bad actors or maybe that we’re talking about social media websites.
I guess this format gives off a dude’s “Love, Live, Laugh” version of righteousness, that even though the message may be correct, it just feels like a weird marketing technique.
OK I laughed at dudes version if live laugh love. 😂 Either way we’re fucked I guess. I have my gun ready to act but I’m sure as hell not dying by myself.
I limited my internet time to just an hour or two a day and stopped caring about any of this worthless performative BS.
If there are causes you care about or actions you want to take to impact the world and make a difference, GOING THE FUCK OUTSIDE does so, so much more than this kind of roleplay teenage bullshit. Moving your worthless scrolling time from one website to another isn’t going to bring the establishment to its knees. But going out and donating a box of socks and underwear to a community food bank will literally change someone’s life.
edit: if these kinds of messages make you angry or feel called out, that’s a sure, 100% accurate predictor that you’re exactly who this message is directed at. For that matter, if you’re reading the feelings and opinions of others (what social media is) then you’re not living your own life and finding your own emotional states and this is why we’re here. We’re discarding our lives to live in both the rage and satisfaction of others. When was the last time you sought out other HUMANS to feel these things? How much have you worked to exercise whatever shriveled spark of free-will is left in there? Are you just surfing from stimulation to stimulation as your brain invents rationalizations for your lack of actual life and progress? GO OUT AND DO LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE, YOU SHOULDN’T BE SITTING IN FRONT OF YOUR MONITOR ANGRY YOU DENSE, TRAPPED MOTHERFUCKER.
You assume that because I’m discussing these things online that I don’t take action. Not that it’s any of your business but I’m going to a community cleanup tomorrow. I’ll be bringing a chair and watching people pick up litter.
Is this done by teenagers?
Quite possibly. There’d be no real way of knowing. But it does sound like young people trying to find an outlet and seeking change–as ineffectual as it may seem to jaded old timers.
I saw it being denounced as a psyop which I thought was funny, since I think it pretty clearly isn’t one. But directing people to lemmy.ml is bad advice as most of us know.
When I first heard of Lemmy, I curiously poked around, and at the time it was just lemmygrad and ml. Needless to say I backed out quickly. Glad it got some diversity with the api kerfuffle.
I love it, but I fear for the day Lemmy becomes so popular that it is worthwhile for the corporate bots to begin gaming Lemmy’s algorithm to dominate front pages. I don’t think Lemmy is prepared to defend against this.
I am still new to the fediverse but I figured that smaller constellations will federate without connecting to the largest federation.
It’s harder to manipulate 500 disjoint federations than 1 really large one. Especially when some of those federations rely on heavy verification.
Of course those smaller federations are likely organized around specific purposes or organizing interests rather than broad public discourse.
You might want to have a look at https://gui.fediseer.com/
This is an interesting idea and provides some inspiration thank you
Part of what makes Reddit so great is the huge community of content creators. Both the posts and comments. Lemmy has slowly been catching up, but still is far off.
Defederating from large instances will just result in lower quality content for those instances. I would hope there’d be a better solution, but I’m not smart enough to think of one.
Maybe the secret is to let each instance control their own sorting algorithm. They keep getting the content from the large instances, but control how it gets brought to the front page. My guess is this would be no small task, but that would definitely make it difficult to game the algorithm.
So with all due respect I think you’re coming at this from a different set of experiences and assumptions as to what constitutes “good content.”
I’m a transsexual and many of us have already migrated into closed Discord servers in order to specifically avoid what you consider to be “benefits” of federating with large instances.
The same things you think are so great about Reddit have been driving us off the platform for years in search of more niche and protected communities.
I’m not denying that your use case here is valid. Just that it’s a very mainstream view of what good social media is. But mainstream appeal doesn’t necessarily mean better for all of us in all communities.
The fediverse has the potential in the digital world to be like gay villages once were in meat world. Isolated and self-segregated, safer than most places though hate crimes and bath house raids still continued, and essential for organizing networks of support/protection between ourselves.
We definitely have different use cases. I’m looking for the exact same thing I had on Reddit, but on a platform controlled by people that won’t sell our user experience for share prices.
Doesn’t mean I want the Nazis and homophobes here as well. But the content I enjoyed on Reddit is what I would want here. Not just fun memes and news stories, but niche communities and the great comments you’d get from Reddit.
Sounds like you didn’t like what you had on Reddit and are looking for something different.
I think we might reach a point that, instead of one application in the beginning, we’d have to have periodic “re-verification” to prove that you are human (and haven’t been taken over by a bot). Like maybe once every 6 months. And on the 5th month, you can begin early submission for the re-verification application.
Aside from other concerns, I find the association with Brexit to be less than ideal. But people should also note that this was posted on r/anarchocommunism so it makes sense they recommended lemmy.ml
Overall it’s fine, we are still at the stage where just getting people to hear about the existence of Lemmy is a big win. They may join and leave, they may just navigate to the page and not join, but now they are aware of it and may eventually decide to join in the future when reddit fucks up again.
DB0 would be a far better fit like @NOT_RICK@lemmy.world said
That’s true, but I’m just pointing out that it’s a leftist subreddit recommending lemmy.ml, so it’s not going out to a generalized audience.
And honestly they’re not as tankie as people claim, that title really belongs to hexbear and lemmygrad. The management of lemmy.ml is tankie friendly, but many or even most of the users are not actually tankies.
It’s very complicated because they were the main server for a long time before any of us even joined Lemmy, and all of their public descriptions don’t even mention leftism at all, it’s just about privacy and FOSS. Many users have made accounts there and used it for years without really caring or engaging with the tankie allegations or posts. It’s not as bad as some people make it out to be.
Hexbear on the other hand is actually worse than anyone could ever explain without experiencing it for yourself. So let’s not forget the two servers are not identical.
The management of lemmy.ml is tankie friendly, but many or even most of the users are not actually tankies.
You haven’t been on .ml much or don’t pay attention to the subtleties if you think the admins and main mods aren’t full blown Tankies. And they’re quick to silence dissenting voices that dare criticize China or Russia, no matter how deserving or right
.ml is more subtle than hex that’s true, but they’re absolutely Tankies just the same and consider hex and grad friends.
On the contrary, I do pay attention to the subtleties. Dessalines and many of the mods on their most active communities are tankies.
But I’ve never seen evidence that Nutomic is a tankie, and many of the smaller moderators and users aren’t tankies either.
In fact, if you ask hexbear and lemmygrad what they think of Nutomic, they’ll probably tell you he’s a liberal, enlightened centrist, or cryptofascist, which all mean roughly the same thing according to their idiosyncratic version of the English language. I.e., he has been pushing back against tankies and hexbears since well before the APIcalypse, back when almost the whole Lemmy userbase was tankie.
Talking about several thousand people as if they all share the exact same political beliefs and behave the exact same way is pretty much the definition of not paying attention to the subtleties.
First of all, that has absolutely no bearing on whether or not Nutomic is a tankie. So I’m assuming you concede that you were completely wrong about that.
Second of all, that’s a screenshot of a private message.
What specifically bothers you about what he said there?
Are you serious? Who says shit like that outside of being a Tankie?
At this point I can see where this is going and I no longer believe you to be arguing in good faith and is probably just being a Tankie apologist.
Goodbye.
idk, i’ve seen screenshots and modlogs where mods ban people from every .ml community for diagreeing with them
IIRC that was an automated function that wasn’t always intentional. Unfortunately I can’t find the thread where I heard that. I believe it had something to do with a specific version of Lemmy though.
I’ve seen all the screenshots, c/meanwhileongrad is on my server. But many of those incidents have a lot of context that isn’t captured by the screenshots, when you look more closely
Then how come it only removes the specific comments that annoy the mods?
The removal of certain comments is intentional and politically motivated and I don’t approve. But then when you see people getting banned from like 20 other communities in the modlog due to that one comment, I think that was sometimes unintentional.
Idk, you’d think they would share the script or whatever it is, how come it doesn’t happen on non-tankie friendly instances.
where every user is a revolutionary
Ahem. Cosplays as a revolutionary.
Technically correct, but I wonder how people are gonna handle the really serious dictator shit, like friends and relatives disappearing instead of tweets.
We need a place to communicate, coordinate, and share what’s happening. Control of the narrative and the ability to prevent coordinated responses are essential for their plans.
So okay, now that we have clear alternatives to reddit, twitter, etc, is it time to work on the actual problems yet or keep raging about corporate media?
Another reddexit?
There have been multiple, i left at the second, but reddit is filled to the brim with AI accounts and people who have no idea. Even if its all fake, reddit has enough traffic Tongo on for a while.
True. But Reddit has already lost users. I 100% noticed a reduction after they banned 3rd party apps. Daily top posts don’t have as many upvotes as they used to. Less total comments.
A small win, but a win nonetheless. I mean, we’re here.
here we go bois
