Is that really how user-blocking has been implemented?

I thought messages from blocked users were just hidden from view like it is done everywhere else in the Fediverse?

I don’t think this is a good way to implement user blocks… say a user posts some Covid-19 denial stuff… so I write a lengthy reply to inform other users that this is BS, just to be greeted by a “you can’t post this” message on pressing the post button.

Not only should this be clearly visible before writing a lengthy reply, but also is a comment not only meant as a reply to the original author (that might have blocked you) but to inform other readers as well.

That is what I meant with hiding.

But I really don’t think preventing top level comments is a good idea either. Why not just hide those too?

Agree, it should be possible to reply with a comment to somebody who blocked you. The comment should just be hidden from that user.

Besides suppressing discussion, the current behaviour also makes it too easy to tell that someone blocked you. I think it should be as hard as possible to figure that out.

I see… I’ll open up an issue then. I spose I’ll try to allow any comment replies, but make sure they’re hidden from the blocker.

          Sounds good to me :)

Edit: Maybe the entire thread of a blocked top-level comment should be hidden? Or maybe some sort of collapsed “blocked top-level comment” thread could be shown?

In how comment trees are built, it won’t show any branches under a blocked commenter.
