  • As far as Windows 11 is concerned, the difference between those CPUs is hardware presence for fTPM 2.0

Windows 11 uses that for Bitlocker, Core Isolation, and (I think) Local Security Authority features.

Windows 11 is otherwise the same as 10 - I’ve yet to encounter anything that worked in 10 but didn’t in 11.

If those features aren’t important to you, you could easily perform an “unsupported” upgrade to Windows 11 and your system would be just as secure and functional as it is now. You would then be able to enable those features when you upgrade the CPU down the line.

  • Decided to get 16GB more RAM, a Ryzen 5 2600, and a Gen 3 Sabrent Rocket 1TB SSD

What are your actual improvement goals? Based on your post, it seems like gaming is the focus but your purchases don’t really align with that.

Very few games require or benefit from 32GB of RAM. Those that do aren’t going to run well on your current hardware anyways.

The Ryzen 5 2600 is more of a sidegrade from where you are. I would have recommended going for any Ryzen 5000 processor or waiting.

Storage is storage, so do with that what you will.

Starting with GPU would really have been the way to go for gaming improvements, with CPU as a secondary 2 later upgrade. RX6600 / RX7600 could be had new around your budget, shopping used would likely stretch that budget out further.

  • I meant that I was on the beta branch for SteamOS / Decky Loader, thoygh perhaps Junk Store too. I figured it was likely a conflict with another plugin (probably something in CSS Loader) but hadn’t bothered to diagnose which.

I’ll totally be giving it another shot since it seems awesome :)

  • Seems like I should give Junk-Store another shot I had installed it back when I was on beta branch and it was… funky. It had me sign in to Epic and then the frame / overlay wouldn’t go away, I had to force restart my Deck just to make it usable again.

I tried a few times here and there and ran into the same issue, so it’s just been sitting installed as a spooky button.

  • A few things stand out to me in your screenshot.

It lists the GPU as consuming 0W, which is likely not true. Based on that, the power / current limit reason is probably inaccurate

Your temperatures are both well below TJ Max for those components, so I don’t see the Temp limit reason as valid either.

Your GPU utilization is at around 50%, but I also see your framerate at an even 144 - I would surmise that you have vsync enabled.

Unfortunately, Fediverse apps still have a lot of UX issues compared to their mainstream alternatives. Those will need to be smoothed over for mainstream adoption to take root.

They’re attractive to the tech inclined who are comfortable working around what, to them, is minor clunkiness. Mainstream users have shorter attention spans and are more likely to move on when there’s friction.

Far as the meme is concerned, the only Fediverse equivalent is Loops which is still in closed beta.

  • The OEM Steam Deck LCD screen is $65.

The OEM Steam Deck OLED Screen is $95, $145 for the version with the anti-glare etching.

$140 is totally reasonable for an aftermarket product like this.

It might not make sense for most to purchase and install as an upgrade on its own, but it’s the same workflow as a shell swap so the two upgrades can easily go hand in hand. For users with a broken screen, it also provides a repair option that is also an improvement.

Also, just want to point out that flashing a BIOS is a pretty trivial task, strikes me as a bit weird to list the mildest of inconveniences as a deterrent.

I don’t get the impression this is being presented to anyone as “a massive benefit over just buying an OLED model”, but it does cost ~$400 less and reduce waste.
