Here’s what makes this whole thing absurd
The ban in question was a 3-day ban from r/youll_be_banned which is a subreddit where getting banned is literally part of its punchline. You make a post, you get banned if the mods are in a bad mood, and that’s just the joke
Why on earth would I try to circumvent such a short ban, from that subreddit of all subreddits?
Still, it doesn’t change that I’ve been accused by the automated system, even for something that I did not do
Right after I got that message about the sitewide ban, I panicked and sent a half-baked appeal explaining that I had zero intent. Of course that appeal got rejected because I didn’t explain the context above. You could tell from the wording itself that I was still experiencing the shock of it all
And, well there is a page allowing me to send my second appeal. I’m just scared of it getting rejected again somehow
I think in the meantime, I’m just gonna stop shouting into the void and reach out here to you guys, just to talk it over. It’s been 11 days since the ban, and I’ve been a little depressed about it
Does anyone want to share their experiences?
Edit: Submitted my second appeal which says:
My 3-day ban was from r/youll_be_banned, where bans are part of the joke. I didn’t intentionally evade it. Please review the specific activity behind my permanent suspension; my first appeal lacked context.
Wish me luck, even if my luck is low. If they still don’t hear it, oh well I guess
I’ve been banned on reddit so many times I’ve gotten the ‘permanent’ ban message for the last 4 or so. That place changed. It’s very intolerant and has no sense of humor. My first account was 11 years old at the time of first banning. After that first ban, I probably got banned every year for many years running.
No sense of humor. No sense of proportion. No sense that this is an anonymous internet forum.
It’s so much kinder here. People help you learn, rather than ridicule you for being wrong. Stay, help build this little tree fort into something grand, friend.
This place really is growing on me
Been perma banned three times for challenging right wing views- been using Lemmy for a year now and haven’t looked back. I do miss the vast archive of data that formed Reddit but now that AI models are stealing all its data, I don’t see a bright future for it other than a gathering of bot accounts spreading nefarious agendas
They report spam anything that challenges their views. It’s a broken windows type of strategy. Content mods will see a bunch of reports accumulated against you and assume you must be a problematic account.
Have you actually seen organized campaigns aimed at pushing particular agendas, or are you just calling anyone who disagrees with you a “bot account”? just asking.
I’m just scared of it getting rejected again somehow
dude. there is life after reddit. it’s a shithole.
Yeah, you’re right. The transition from being a terminally online Redditor and now being banned from it makes you realize just how much of your life has been consumed by it
I mean, I almost got the Grass Toucher achievement for crying out loud
In some ways, I guess it’s not so bad to have the opportunity to see past it
Of course that appeal got rejected because I didn’t explain the context above.
The repeal was rejected because they’re never not rejected.
I posted info on effective ban evasion https://lemmy.world/post/52856407 , so far so good. IP address is by far the highest hurdle to clear these days, because of the crackdown on spammers. The universal weak spot with IPs is cell phones. It’s too complicated to lock phone numbers to IPs since cell phones constantly move around, but I’m sure they would love to do this and might some day find a way to make it happen. But until that happens, it’s the only back door, outside of paying good money for clean domestic IPs in your own timezone.
Reddit is fighting ban evaders with the same fire they used to go after bot networks, and probably losing a lot of valid, well meaning users in the process.
So they really just think I’m as bad as a bot network, Jesus Christ no wonder they went full Shoretrooper from Andor on me

With all that you’ve pointed out, I just really don’t want to go there… at least not yet
My goal is to at least try everything that I can first, to appeal it every once in a while if I can. I can’t prove their suspicions by being exactly what I’m trying to make my case about not being
I’m only on reddit for three or four subreddits. I was banned from two of them for moderate political views. Not surprisingly, my new account has not been banned by the subreddits I like, but other subreddits have banned my account using something I just learned existed called “/u/bot-bouncer” which is apparently a non-reddit service that somehow decides if a new account is a bot or not based on account age and post history analysis alone. Absolutely crazy. This of course increases the ban evasion threat considerably.
That’s shitty. I know everyone here hates reddit but it still sucks losing something you’ve spent a lot of time enjoying. A lot of people here deal with that by being angry at reddit. That’s OK too.
I don’t even feel angry. Just straight up sad
Like, I feel as if I’ve just lost everything that made the internet fun. My niche interests just feel so lonely now, my connection to a huge pool of advisors just… gone
Dude that sucks. I’m sorry. This place is growing but it’s definitely not there yet. Losing that access to knowledge really sucks.
It’s a shit site full of bots. Who cares?
Find a better alternative and move on.
Besides Lemmy, what alternatives do people recommend?
Just browse Wikipedia when you’re bored. Find some trusted newssites and visit them/subscribe to their feeds.
You lived before Reddit you can do it again if Lemmy isn’t for you.
I used RSS before Reddit
Sorry to hear that. My suspicion is that there’s nothing you could have done to successfully appeal. The stories that I’ve heard here sounds like the entire ban appeal process is just a kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare, and it’s only getting worse over time
I banned Reddit. No regrets.
I’m guessing your life got better after you stopped using it? Heh, maybe mine will
I’m trying really hard to see the upside of things. Like, maybe the fact that my life feels so empty now… just shows exactly how addicted to Reddit I was
I’ll be completely real with you.
I’m not saying Lemmy is a magical world of unicorns and rainbows where everyone is bursting with love and respect, but my life, or at least the part of it I spent staring at my phone, DID get better.
I was subscribed to A LOT of Reddit drama subs. Originally, it was because I would be going through some shit and wanted to talk it out with others, but they stayed in my subscriptions and every day I found myself getting sucked into the drama of people I would never meet.
When I started my Lemmy account, it was a blank slate. I only added communities that were fun and interesting. Every now and then I get into some heated drama, but it’s not as constant as it was on Reddit, and now, when I put my phone down, I just feel less angry and depressed than I did on Reddit.
Oh, and don’t be afraid to block people that ruin your day.
You should ponder the fact that a website ban has you depressed. You shouldn’t allow a corporate entity to hold that power over you. You’re just a revenue stream to them
getting a ban reversed on reddit is virtually impossible. if it’s your first ban, you may be able start over on a new account with a different email address and avoid the sub you got banned from. ymmv, ban evasion is one of the triggers for a permaban that can follow you forever. It’s been 3 years for me, and I still can’t make an account without being shadowbanned immediately.
Damn, really? Aw man, that sucks I’m sorry to hear :(
Do you still have any appeals left? Or is it all just closed for you? How many appeals have you sent?
I’ve recently started re logging into my old permabanned account when I visit public wifi or people’s houses who share their wifi.
Really funny to hear people in the background mention how shitty Reddit is because it thinks they are banned.
