For the damage it’s doing, fossil fuels should be several times more expensive to compensate in climate change costs and reduce demand.
There should be a carbon tax, but whoever signs it will be the least popular president in history. One of the flaws of democracy is that sometimes the thing that really needs to happen is unpopular with the moronic citizenry that can’t understand why it needs to happen.
There are countries who already do have a CO2 tax.
The problem isn’t that prices are going up. The problem is we’re not paid anywhere near what we should be.

It’s both. We’re not getting paid the full value of our labor, annual wage cuts are the default, and the only safe ways to save require buying into that same system of oppression.
The problem isn’t any of those things. The problem is that there isn’t enough affordable housing, and not enough housing period. We’re literally in a near-global housing crisis. Everything else would be fine if that wasn’t the case.
Wages are double what they used to be when gas was $2/gallon. So $4/gallon shouldn’t be a problem.
The problem is housing, followed by grocery. And in some areas, followed by energy.
Gas isn’t even on the list. It only feels as bad as it does because of everything else.
Not that it couldn’t be cheaper.

I don’t strongly disagree; housing is one of those safe places to invest in our own oppression.
And also the system of global exploitation that gave us cheap goods because we oppressed the global south into accepting low wages (aka imperialism) has reached a point where the capitalists are extracting diminishing returns. This means they have to turn their gaze towards home and exploit us more in order to keep increasing their profit margins.

Petrol is super cheap, because the only thing you can really do with it is burn it for energy.
That and you waste 60-90 percent of that energy potential as heat.

That is exactly what we are doing in the upper end of that efficiency range (turbochargers, turbine generators, heater cores) - the waste heat from that is unharvestable (exhaust gas, engine core heat).
Yea, combined cycle gas turbine power plants are pushing above 60% efficiency. They use the waste heat from the turbine exhaust to generate steam and then extract energy from there. About as good as it gets.
Cars could be a lot better if emissions wasn’t a concern.
EV charging stations should start putting up gas station style boards showing the current price per kWh. Not that a kWh of electrons gets you as far as a gallon of gas, but a substantial chunk of the population will see the smaller number and start thinking about switching.
The conversion for eMPG (which yes, is possibly the most cursed of units) is ~33 kwh equals a gallon. My PNW home electricity prices are pretty low, but that puts an eGallon at ~$2.97.
If anything I think that number is misleadingly high, but that’s part of why it’s possibly the most cursed unit.
I get 4.2 m/kWh on the highway, $2.97 / eGallon seems very high to me.

Technically he isn’t wrong, but not for the reasons he thinks. Gas prices are subsidized significantly. And if they weren’t, people sure wouldn’t drive as much. Unsubsidized it would be between 10 and 15 per gallon. So if 2 to 4 is double, that would mean it would now be 20 to 30. So like a dollar a mile in his math.

Where I live, gas is 2.28€/L, that’s about $11.80/gallon, still people rather drive their car to work every day instead of riding the 2000€ eBike collecting dust in their garage, and they are 5km (3.1mi) away from work. I would argue has price is not expensive enough for them.
On the other hand, the student we have on part time, rides the train 2 hours to come, because it’s too expensive for him to tank up his motorcycle.
