I guess nobody did any work a few years back when AI wasn’t being shoved down our throats. Also imagine being a carpenter or an electrician and being asked if you can get through your entire workday without AI. That guy is such an idiot is makes my head hurt.

Your second point was where my mind immediately went. I have never used AI at work and have no way to use AI at work even if I wanted to, because I don’t use a computer for work. Even if I was a massive AI supporter, I’d still see exactly zero difference at work.
Exactly. I’m a professional, but I use AI in my work now. It makes things easier and faster (by digging though logs for 24 hours and whatnot), but I did that before.
Sure I’d be able to do my job just the same, but getting paged at 2am, I’d have to spend 45 mins figuring out what to do (clicking links, waiting for page loads, parsing 2000 log lines, etc) while AI does it in just 5-10mins. I get to focus on my actual work instead of the bullshit oncall alarms.
I hate the environmental impact, but those that know how to use it and program it are actually benefiting from it.
I work as a software engineer and I don’t use any of those things… so yea… if I can do it, most people, the overwhelming majority of people can do it.
I’m forced to for work but I could happily go back if it all disappeared.

He must have wet dreams about developing software for a customer, without having to pay some stupid developers for it.
Sounds like he and AI deserve each other, and he should probably just start a new company with just him and AI to do all the work without those inefficient employees. In fact, he should ask AI if it’s a good idea. If there’s anything he’s unsure about, AI could reassure him to go for it.

Another senior software dev here with nearly 20 years experience. I have never needed or used these tools. Cuz fuckem, that’s why.
Reviewing large AI PRs is the worst. I think being verbose is a good thing through function and variable naming, and comments for head scratching bits of cose, but AI can take it to an extreme degree with comments everywhere. Reading and critequing/discussing code and patterns used to be one of my favorite parts of the job.
My coworker who’s fully in bed with AI barely understood the code he wrote before, but asking him a question now is just an indirect means of using Claude. It has gotten to the point where I’m writing my PR comments more in the style of a prompt because it’s obvious he just pastes them in to Claude anyway.
One thing worse than AI PRs is AI bug reports.
One is a user that experiences a symptom that could be described in a quick copy/paste with maybe a sentence. Instead they have “AI” dig in and generate a dissertation on what it thinks is the issue and the original issue is lost in the AI diagnosis. Since the user doesn’t even have it wired up to actually test the hypothosis, it is just the AI first guess, which is frequently wrong. Wasting my time and failing to provide data.
The other is someone letting AI run over code and report “bugs” as in “it disagreed on some detail in the code, even though no person has actually experienced misbehavior, nor is the particular issue a security issue, but it might be an issue that some person one day eventually might hit”.
But I totally feel the coworker that had questionable code before that is now just utterly hopeless thanks to AI. I have nothing to do with his project but occasionally got called in to figure out and explain why his code would flip out. It hasn’t passed test in over a month as it’s now eternally buggy. Any attempt he makes to fix bugs inevitably lands with more bugs. But it’s too far now, he can’t turn back (CodeGen rewrote his codebase in a language he can’t follow, so he can’t hand edit, and he’s too afraid to roll back to when he almost understood his code). Hilarious one time within a week where he reported he could work on his project no more because he had exhausted his tokens, and without the tokens he can’t do anything anymore. Framed this as a failure of management to fund his needs adequately.
I have been shocked at just how many people, people long in the business seem to actively hate writing code. How much additional work they are willing to go through to claim victory in development through prose. Spending hours trying to get CodeGen to fix a trivial CSS issue in a web page that would have taken less than a minute if they just hit f12 and looked at the offending element. I can’t fathom how they could stand their careers for sometimes two decades before CodeGen came available if they hated it just so much.
Analogy is a little weak, because so much of modern AI has been shoehorned in after obliterating the more traditional routes for internet information lookups.
If the traditional search engines have had their results irrepairably ruined by SEO and advertising? If you’re locked out of Wikipedia, because it’s been blacklisted for Wokeness? If StackExchange and Reddit have gone to shit because of all the spam? If you can’t use Discord from your company/school intranet? If your coworkers are all new hires, because your boss fired all the old-heads for demanding real living wages, and now you’re surrounded by a bunch of college grads with no experience in the company systems?
Then yeah, I guess AI is what you’re left with.

YMMV. I’ve been on intranets that keep a whitelist and block everything else. And since Wikipedia wasn’t whitelisted, it was blocked by default.

If you’re a consultant, you’re going to be working inside other people’s networks. And those networks are going to have their own rules.
Have literally caught AI getting Holocaust facts wrong on repeated occasions. Anyone taking it seriously is full of misinformation at this point.

This is partly what’s been said in this thread (from my skimming of the top 10 comments) but also because a lot of people are so fucking dumb that AI has been like Neo in the Matrix for them. They are so dumb that using basic words to search and filtering through the results seems like black magic. Now they feel empowered and smart. It’s extremely fucking scary.
