I see communities with almost no posts and the only moderator deleted their account. Shouldn’t these be deleted?
Why would they?
I think abandoned communities just spend server space, right? This and unused accounts.
Unless it was a hugely popular community with years and years of content posted to it, not just text but videos and photos etc, the server space some text posts and usernames take up is a rounding error.
I see no problem. As a user, I can just sort by most active communities when searching them.
Deleting communities to free server space also means deleting our history, doesn’t seem very nice.
Instance admins can appoint new moderators to any community if/when someone wants to take over one of the currently dead ones. That’s why many instances have a
community_requestscommunity, where anyone can request mod rights for a community that no longer has an active moderator.
