I went back to school to study advanced math a couple years ago and it was a blast. Math as an adult is great.
I was just thinking the other day I should check out graph theory
I’ve been wanting to get into category theory lately. It genuinely sounds super fun
That was my niche in grad school. I authored a paper proving that the CW-complexes in the category of small categories under the Joyal-Tierney model structure are exactly the groupoids. I never came up with a reason why anyone should care, but at least it was fun.
That looks like gobbledygook to me, and I wanna get all up in dat good good gook.
I hear königsberg is lovely this time of year.
Walking the bridges eventually gets repetitive tho
That’s so weird, I was just thinking the other day how much I love squeezing lemons directly into my eyes.
Stop being edgy.
It was actually fun to do khan academy high school math on my own terms
I think I might do that too in the future. Tried it before but I wasn’t in the right head space back then.
Took me a moment to realize he didn’t grab a pink frog outta nowhere to yell at…
Oh good, you see them too
Math is very interesting if you can take your time to understand it
Honestly, if you audit the class without the pressure of the grade, it probably WOULD be fun. The stress usually comes from needing a good GPA etc
A class of students doing that would be a million times more fun for the professors too. Acadamia would be so much better if education were its primary purpose.
I wrote a computer game (including the engine), and matrix / vector math plays a key role in movement and rendering. Definitely needed some refreshers, but the good thing is it is not abstract anymore like it was in school, all math things are directly relevant to in-game objects and mechanics.
I took a computer graphics class as a freshman that blew my mind with the concepts, but the math was way above my level. Basically 1/2 the class was graduate students, and the prof was talking about partial derivatives on day 1. There wasn’t even a math requirement…
Around 4 years after the class I went and relearned it and finally realized what the teacher was talking about and I was blown away for a 2nd time.
Is this computer game available? I’d like to try it out
Of course! Dark Streets on Lexaloffle
Plays in browser, you can see the code right there too, or LMK if you want a more-commented version (had to remove comments to save space)
I got as far as Calculus III and Linear Algebra in college. Nowadays I’m sure I could not do a derivation or an integration to save my fucking life and when I see a matrix my brain thinks “wow, numbers in a grid!”
Something computation heavy? Yeah no that sounds exhausting. Something proof heavy? Mmm, don’t mind if I do.
Ouch!
“Fun” is really not the right word. Even if you will like doing that course, “fun” is really not the right word.
Theoretical CS is the most interesting stuff I have ever thought about. It’s fun to me the same way an interesting book is fun to read. Different from riding a rollercoaster - but not un-fun at all
can tell they need more math classes because they have all those cowlicks
I’ll take the waterboarding instead, thank you
