“Female” instead of woman or girl.

Edit: as in, where “woman” or “girl” would be grammatically correct. e.g. “a lot of females work at that company” vs “a lot of women work at that company” or “that company has a lot of female employees”

    “I’m a patriot!”

Okay so, 1) I wasn’t questioning your patriotism until you said that. And 2) with zero exceptions, everyone I’ve ever heard say that turned out to be a Christian nationalist.

I think “patriot” is one of those titles that should only be given, and that ideally happens to someone who’s done something especially heroic or monumental for their country. I think of myself as patriotic, because I care a lot about my country despite its enormous, gangrenous flaws. I want to help it realize its potential. But to say “I’m a patriot” these days – I agree with you – really only connotes blind nationalism.

If you truly weren’t racist, you would hate everyone equitably.

This one can be fun to mess with, just taking it to a completely arbitrary place.

‘I’m not a racist but I had a salad for lunch yesterday.”

“I’m not a racist but at some time later this week I need to take my car in for an oil change.”

“I’m not a racist, but I think Family Guy used to be a lot funnier than it has been recently.”

One time I said “oh I don’t get involved in politics” by which I meant, “I don’t organize with any particular party” (which was the context). But I think about that all the time and hope they did not think what I always think when people say they are apolitical.

I’m very political, I just generally prefer non-partisan work.

I treat this one with a grain of salt, because its very good at some things and utterly fucking useless at others.

I needed to know what company made the gearbox in a certain car. No matter what I searched in 3 different search engines all I could find was people wanting to sell me stuff for the gearbox or gearboxes. I spent an hour before I asked ChatGPT and it immediately spat out “The gearbox is a 4l80 produced by Aisin transmissions” which I then spent some time verifying. At the core if search engines hadnt been enshitified, ChatGPT would be nothing more than a novelty. But because they have, its a sometimes useful tool that anyone with half a brain verifies.

If you treat it like gospel, yeah… your an idiot.

That’s the thing though. If someone has used chat gpt to find information and then spent the time to verify it independently, they rarely, if ever, start a sentence with “I asked chat gpt…”.

The ones that say that usually just stop at the first response they get from it. Even if what they say ends up being correct, you now know that they’re the kind of person that’ll blindly believe an LLM.

yes!! I was setting up Lyrion Music Server and I’m kind of an idiot, so when I had a specific question about that I asked a clunker. There’s very little documentation or discussion about it (weirdly, it’s awesome) so it was extremely helpful. But yeah for the most part I don’t use it.

I think a big problem is the info is out there, but they are awful at search. They still think Google is good. In today’s world you need 3 different search engines and also asking folks in the fediverse helps a lot if my issues.

But people want to go to the orphan crushing machine bot to ask it questions, because its easier.

We never needed llm slop for this. We needed a non corporate greed driven search and educated populace (now THERES a good joke!!)

I have a friend who says this and every time I’m like “when did anyone on the left do anything close to as bad as ____” (DOJ lying constantly, trump saying officials who oppose him should be executed, etc) and every time he says “well if they’re doing that that’s pretty messed up but the left does bad stuff too.”

The right’s real harm is framed as hypothetical, while the left’s harm is made to look "just as bad, without giving an example, you probably know this but your friend is pretty much a right winger.

Yeah every time I bring up trump saying things like “I am currently breaking the law spending campaign funds to pay off a pornstar” the most common right wing response is “that sounds like fake news, the media hates trump.” As I am actively trying to show them the court documents quoting him. They don’t care what actually is true, trump just passes the vibe check for “says republican things.”

I think my friend just doesn’t know a lot about it and assumes one side can’t just be doing completely insane stuff, and if trump constantly broke the law then of course he would be in jail, so if he isn’t in jail the stuff couldn’t be that bad. He would probably be a non-voter which in this case was essentially a vote for trump unfortunately.

The first and easiest is always the phofaux-militaristic active wear. Its like adidas trainers on a guy squatting. When you know you know. If its an aiport, their bag has just an abusurd number of places to velcro things and a place to put a fake unit patch. Also, chuds mostly travel in packs, so the probability of them actually being a chud increases at a rate of 1- e-1/N chuds per unit area.

See also lifted yota’s tacomas with a bunch tac gear, and a big-ol’ floor jack the think they need to carry around., none of which has ever been used, see also the F-350, and of course, the all-to-obvious “one dude in a cyber truck”.

Hey! I’ve been wearing camo and pseudo-tactical shit on the daily since long before it became fashionable. It used to be back in the good old days that military surplus gear was the cheap way for broke motherfuckers to get vaguely performant and moreover highly durable outdoor wear, plus it’s always full of pockets. Bonus points if you were also some kind of airsoft/paintball nerd.

You remember when the US switched to digital camouflage in the 2000s, then realized it was a terrible idea and switched back?

Any idea why you didn’t see cheap digital camouflage jackets around? Did they just not make to milsurp stores?

I have three sets of digital camo BDUs. Two sets of MARPAT, and one of some generic grey “urban” coloration. I didn’t find them difficult to source at all. Insulated jackets, though, I don’t know about.

Yeah, that’s the one I’d expect to see around, since you know, cheap jackets that go to -40F. I saw quite a few of them in cold parts of China and even Kazakhstan and it made me curious why I didn’t remember any in America.

Oh, they’re about. I just haven’t seen any with modern-ish MARPAT patterns on them, for instance. If you just want an OD green one or something you can usually turn one up. If not truly surplus, one of the milspec manufacturers like Truspec will sell you one for a hundred bucks.

Or getting worked up about the nationality/skin color of fictional characters where nationality/race is not a central issue to the plot or character.
