You load sixteen tons, what do you get?

Another day older and deeper in debt

Saint Peter, don’t you call me, 'cause I can’t go

I owe my soul to the company store

You can just replace company store with whatever capitalist institution owns you. 🫠

Truth. My grandpa sang sixteen tons all the time and taught me from a young age that the bourgeoisie doesn’t give a fuck about us poor folk and that bootstraps weren’t made to pull yourself up with. He taught me to take every advantage in life that I can get and to never stop fighting for what is right.

He lived an absolutely wild life before settling down with my grandma, so his super leftist ways made sense in a dude his age. I have him and my mom to thank for making me such a radical lefty. I’m actually going to the next no kings with my mom lol

            1000%

He met one of the first ladies, I can’t remember which one, in passing in a hotel while he was drunk off his ass. He told her the flowers she was holding were ugly. He only later found out he’d insulted a first lady.

He was also banned from entering the state of New York after he pissed in a rich, influential guy’s coat pocket while high as fuck on heroin. Rich dude sent him to PA for rehab instead of having him see jailtime. My grandpa stayed because he met my grandma after leaving the halfway house lol.

“Despite all my rage I’m still just a rat in a cage”

    &

“So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell
    Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you could tell?
Did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl
    Year after year
Running over the same old ground
    What have we found
    The same old fears
    Wish you were here”

Deine Gewalt ist nur ein stummer Schrei nach Liebe

Deine Springerstiefel sehnen sich nach Zärtlichkeit

Du hast nie gelernt, dich zu artikulieren

Und deine Eltern hatten niemals für dich Zeit

    Oh-ho-ho, Arschloch!

I only lived in Germany for a bit, but this one stuck in my head pretty hard. Schrei nach Liebe by Die Ärzte

Right, I think the point of it is: yes, maybe you were treated bad, and we can have sympathy for that, but still, being a Nazi is a choice, no one is making you choose that.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded, Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed, Everybody knows the war is over, Everybody knows the good guys lost, Everybody knows the fight was fixed, The poor stay poor, the rich get rich, That’s how it goes, Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking, Everybody knows the captain lied, Everybody got this broken feeling, Like their father or their dog just died, Everybody talking to their pockets, Everybody wants a box of chocolates, And a long-stem rose, Everybody knows…

I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life

I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky

But why, why, why can’t it be, oh can’t it be mine?
