Then there is Australia. Naming a swimming pool after a Prime Minister that drowned.
We love dark humour here, but he was also an avid swimmer.
Not a good one but avid.
They need to rename the maccas where scomo shit himself.
"Allegedly " drowned 😉
Hmm, this sounds a lot like you’re thinking of someone specific. I wonder who that could be…
What about being named after a building?
That’s a brilliant idea, Mr Bungalow
For some reason I think of this skit about twice a year. The other one that often comes to mind, is this one: https://youtu.be/cAYDiPizDIs
Do you think about this skit while you are in a shed?
Oh man, my cousin’s kid, little “Empy” State Building is going to have some stories to tell…
I dunno, Doofenschmirtz Evil Inc. is quite good
Trump is literally unable to see the difference. It doesn’t matter if it was but there by him or someone else, the important thing is that “big thing has my name on it”. He doesn’t see how miserable it is, in his mind he’s winning
Maybe you already listened to her, but Mary Trump has insight…
This is a guy that wears shirts with his own name and branding on them. He’s as crass as they come.
Naming things after people frequently backfires. The person later turns out to be politically divisive, or a nazi, or a rapist, or a pedophile, or some other awful thing.
I’m so tired of seeing “XYZ memorial highway” signs everywhere. And schools should just stick to naming themselves after the region (north/south/east/west), or going by PS numbers. It’s all just asking for trouble and a waste of taxpayer money.
I’m happy to use it to memorialize someone who is long dead (like, at least a century; long enough that we can be pretty sure what kind of person they were in life), or to mark a notable feature or plant or animal in the region. Even an institution (College Park, Museum Way, High School Rd). Not everything has to be purely functional. And if the local government has to pay for the signs to be printed anyway…
Do you realize how many public schools, military bases, and other crap had to be renamed a few years ago because they were named after Confederates? All that signage and letterhead doesn’t just pay for itself.
We knew about them while they were still walking the earth. That was a willful choice, and the change represented a change in values.
Yes, signage costs money. But it also has to be replaced from time to time anyway. I don’t think there are any schools changing their name annually; they probably print new signs up memorializing tournament wins often enough that they can just get it added to an existing print run.
Ah yes, Stalin elementary school, right down the street from Pol Pot high school, next door to Idi Amin College.
Maybe they shouldn’t have named places after enemies of state in the first place.
“I’m happy to use it to memorialize someone who is long dead (like, at least a century; long enough that we can be pretty sure what kind of person they were in life)”
Demonstrates why this is still a bad idea with example. Proceeds to get downvoted. 🤷♂️
Why even give them names that arbitrary/ we should just use Longitude/latitude or similar for everything.
“Which high school did you go to?”
“Oh, good ol’ 40.6146° N –74.4112° W”
Plainfield High?
That goes for steaks as well. /s
And universities
And vodka
And bottled water
And magazines
And morality
That’s okay.
It is mostly possible to erase a person’s legacy, at least in the physical sense. Egypt almost erased a whole-ass pharaoh from history. (Akhenaten)
Yeah just like how all of those Civil War Generals were erased from history for betraying their country for the sake of preserving slavery.
Let’s be real. Americans are incapable of shame. As long as USA continues to exist, Trump’s actions will be whitewashed and there will be statues of him made in the future.
Yeah just like how all of those Civil War Generals were erased from history for betraying their country for the sake of preserving slavery.
This is nowhere near an appropriate comparison to Akhenaten.
Let’s be real. Americans are incapable of shame.
The 2025 elections, where every Donald-won district from 2024 flipped, is empirical evidence to the contrary. It seems that people were on-board for a mass-deportation, but not for the targeting of legal immigrants and the military occupation of American cities.
But sure. It’s your world and your algorithm. Think what you want.
You think Trump has done something worse than starting a war to preserve slavery in which about a million people died?
You have fucking slave masters carved into mountains (stolen from indigenous people during a genocidal campaign) down there FFS. Being American is all about pretending the past was some glorious thing, and believing you have real principles. It’s a nation founded by hypocrisy and you feel like you have to preserve the hypocrisy because somehow that’s the source of freedom and equality.
Americans only really care about wealth and power, and Trump has both. They’ll be carving his face into Rushmore (ignoring any protests of the indigenous people, because fuck them right?) within a few decades. This will be to express dominance over the people that don’t like Trump. A few decades after that they’ll be teaching kids in school how Trump was the greatest President in history because why else would they carve his face into a mountain. American history is just a tool for control, because you’re unable to question it. You worship Founding Father the same way they worship Big Brother in 1984.
You’re incapable of understanding of how things really work in your country because your country demands you believe in the hypocrisy it was all founded on. Everyone knows how stupid your country is just we never told you because it would be rude like telling a child Santa Claus isn’t real. But now you’re not an ally. Santa Claus isn’t real and Founding Father was a slave owning oppressor. Whatever rights and freedoms you had came from voting (just like everywhere else) over many years, but y’all either voted for a fascist or didn’t vote at all, so you’re losing all of the rights and freedoms you believed a magical piece of paper written by fucking slave masters granted to you.
There is also an escalation of this, between naming a building you own, after yourself and naming other’s buildings after yourself let alone monuments
What dictators do is to erect their own monuments, and wreck the memorials of their opponents.
Fun fact, the hollywood walk of fame is a bought honor, you pay for it, you get it. It’s not given out based on some achievement criteria
Yes and no.
You need to have +5 years of history in entertaiment business and/or in community work and somebody else needs to nominate you. Then if the commitee acepts you and you pay the sponsor fee you get the star.
But yeah. If you have lots of money and friends in right places you can pretty much buy it, but its not like any bluecollar worker can just take a loan and buy one for themself without any merit.
Its not really that different than how people get wings in hospitals or libraries named after them. Except Hollywood star does not benefit normal people in any way.
Another fun fact is that once a star is there it’s there - no mechanism to get it removed.
I have no notes.
