their choice
it’s not really a choice for a lot though, is it?
When I see what a hassle having kids is, how stressful it is, the expense, and dire prospects of a good economic future it makes no sense.
The most cynical narcissist will have kids so someone will take care of them in their old age but how likely is that?
I just don’t see why I’d want to. It doesn’t make sense.
i can barely feed myself. why would i raise a child in hunger?
It’s true that it’s not 100% a choice, but physically there’s nothing stopping people from having kids. People are (fairly) prioritizing their financial security over having kids.
Though this may be a comment on abortion. In which case abortion is healthcare and a human right.
I would say that this is correct so long as we have the words informed choice based upon economic realities.
MANN: In this crowded city, it’s hard to see the scale of depopulation and rapid aging already underway. But Li works in China’s sagging real estate industry, and she says she’s already feeling the change.
LI: Housing prices will fall, and the number of home buyers will decrease as well.
Oh no, what a tragedy. (/s)
The world is being destroyed, physically, economically, and culturally by a small and malignant infestation of greedy parasites. There is little hope for future so why would people want to bring their children into it?
This comment is getting way too many upvotes. The world is not that bad and I’m sure 99% of people alive today would rather be alive than to never have been born. I’m not saying it’s that good but it’s not so bad that I would rather be not born.
Could you find your own birth and upbringing?
The conditions that resulted in people having multiple children no longer exist.
Good or bad are relative, however if things that make population go up are good and down are bad.
There are other examples of these changes in society, similar direction, similar causes.
It is not a stretch to use ones observed live to make a claim that things in general are bad.
It’s a vibe. Quite popular.
Being edgy is also a vibe.
Denial, also a vibe.
‘Cause this is Lemmy.
Look, I love this place and sympathize with the sentiment, but it’s also structured as a dramatized, extreme echo chamber. This neat little oasis amongst the burning internet is not (at least for me) representative of real life.
Our leaders have abandoned their stewardship of our population in favor of stewarding only the accounts and balance sheets. If human needs are widely neglected the humans will stop reproducing.
Chicken and egg scenario. The simplest position is that the economy screwed them first, making it almost entirely impossible to afford to bring up a family.
“their choice”
Capitalism kills humankind one way or another
I’m not sure if this is an issue due to capitalism, I think it’s an issue due to education and wealth. The more education and wealth a country has the lower average birth rate.
i think that’s blatantly wrong because people in the US in 1960 had a lot of wealth and also good education yet had a lot of children.
Do you see the nightmare the world has become? Of course they are having fewer kids. Why would you want to bring an innocent life into this horrific bullshit?
It’s creating a snowball effect in Japan, as schools, daycares and kindergartens close down it’s getting harder and harder to find people to watch kids when people need to work. Most daycares have waiting list and point systems determining how much “need” a set of parents have for daycare because there’s not enough of them.
I want to have kids but I just can’t afford it
The vasectomy was the best thing I did for my kids.
Predators dont breed in captivity. If you have kids you are sheep /s
well i’ve seen cats breed just fine in “captivity” (i.e. living in a human environment). i think it’s a bit more complicated than that
