Ouagadougou, October 9, 2025 (AIB) - The Burkinabe government has indicated that the suspension by the American administration of the issuance of tourist and student visas to Burkina Faso amounts to a form of blackmail, in response to Ouagadougou’s repeated refusals to accept the deportation of migrants deemed illegal by Washington.

On Thursday, the United States Embassy announced the suspension of certain categories of visas in Burkina Faso and referred Burkinabe citizens to Togo to obtain these documents.

A few hours later, the head of Burkinabe diplomacy, Karamogo Jean Marie Traoré, clarified, based on a verbal note received from the embassy, that these were tourist and student visas.

He said he was surprised by the decision and said it came after several attempts by Washington to force Ouagadougou to deport migrants deemed illegal.

According to the minister, the last attempt took place on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the day before the announcement of the temporary suspension of visa issuance.

Karamogo Jean Marie Traoré indicated that the American side especially wanted to take advantage of the free visas for African citizens, decided by the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

According to him, this free measure concerns citizens who choose to come freely to Burkina Faso, and not those who are forced to do so.

The minister has repeatedly reaffirmed that Burkina Faso is not a land of deportation, but a land of welcome and hospitality.

Finally, the Minister of Foreign Affairs clarified that his country will apply the principle of reciprocity, without compromising friendship, fraternity and solidarity.

There are lot of people from the African continent(and even from abroad) visiting Burkina Faso! There has been a surge of content about this such as people traveling to the Thomas Sankara mausoleum.

I understand that, and you probably know how I feel about that already. I’m just asking if the USA is demanding Burkina Faso deport people who aren’t from the USA? Not that either is ok, but I suppose the USA can argue they have jurisdiction over their own citizens, but without an extradition treaty, Burkina Faso isn’t obligated to oblige, so too if the people the USA wants deported if they’re not USian.

Oh no. It is the contrary. The US wants BF to accept deportees from the US:

Burkina Faso has said it rejected a proposal by the United States to take in foreigners being deported as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Trump aims to deport millions of immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally and his administration has sought to ramp up removals to third countries, including several in Africa.

Duh! I’m not sure if I read too fast or missed that part altogether. 😶

Thanks so much for showing me, and it’s still ridiculous, although if I were going to be deported to Africa, I can think of worse places to land! I would find it rather amusing if Traoré would take in deportees who want to come, find out their skills and give them jobs with a pathway to citizenship. I know the Burkinabe people have a lot of challenges that need to be addressed first, including security issues, but it’s still a nice dream.
