Hello,
we will be performing the long awaited update to Lemmy 0.19.9 tomorrow.
We are planning for around 1 hour of downtime between 16:00-17:00 UTC on 16th of March.
You can convert this to your local time here: https://inmytime.zone/?iso=2025-03-16T16%3A00%3A00.000Z
You can find an overview of the changes in our previous announcement here and in the Lemmy release notes:
- Lemmy v0.19.4 Release
- Lemmy v0.19.5 Release
- Lemmy v0.19.6 Release
- Lemmy v0.19.7 Release
- Lemmy v0.19.8 Release
- Lemmy v0.19.9 Release
Update 16:50 UTC:
The upgrade was successfully completed at around 16:27 UTC, but we’re still fighting with some performance issues after the upgrade. Our database and the outbound federation container are currently using significantly higher CPU than expected, which is still being investigated to identify the root cause.
A picture you can hear, holy. Vividly, lol
Is that a young dr farnsworth?
That’s the guy who works at the cryogenics facility that Fry was frozen at for 1000 years.
Dr. Farnsworth used to have red hair, the same as his ancestor Fry and his younger clone Cubert.
Get you ass back in the Futurama instance before I paint your back porch red
This is the update that’ll break sync, right?
Sad times, but I guess I’m gonna be deciding between boost and infinity tomorrow
No it won’t. That’s the next major release, this is just LW catching up.
partial breakage, the stuff that people on other instances have already been experiencing for a while.
iirc there are still some additional issues with sync arising with the update, but it won’t be entirely broken.
I’m a sync user and haven’t had any issues, what breakage are you referring to?
there are various mentioned in !syncforlemmy@lemmy.world, the main one i was referring to was the one where in some cases posts in local communities won’t show comments.
Well damn. The comments for me are not so rarely even more important/interesting than the post itself…
Biggest problem for me is that posts no longer show as read. Makes it almost completely unusable. I switched to Voyager and canceled my premium Sync subscription.
Oh phew
For me Sync has been broken since long ago (proud Summit user now), my instance has always been updated faster than .world though, so I can’t really pinpoint since which version I started having issues with it.
Give Voyager a try as well!!
+1 for Voyager. It feels like a spiritual successor to Apollo.
Voyager makes me feel right at home as a former Apollo and RiF user.
Former Sync user of around 5 years. Recently switched to summit and it was a pretty easy transition. I’ve made plenty of rants about how the Dev just abandons paying customers and I finally had enough once I knew that it actually messes things up if you try to report some things.
BOOST BOOST BOOST
Try Summit, it’s slick!

Yeah, yet another proprietary app is really the place to go.
Thunder works great, it FOSS, and under active development.
Edit: A few days after this comment Summit has been open sourced.
Take a look at summit too!
Summit is my main app for Lemmy.
Lemmy Connect :)
Accidentally replied to the wrong comment. Moved.
Finally the people that got baited into adware like sync will be forced to find something better.

the app dev is given full access to the device
That’s not how sandboxing works.
Good luck admins! And thanks for doing it during the Carabao cup final so I have something else to occupy my time while lemmy.world is down :)
What are you going to do with yourself with not being able to entertain us with your memes?
Well in my reddit days, I would open the app, see it was still down and angrily close it again
But with the far superior decentralized Lemmy-verse I just have to switch to an alt on a different instance lol
So now the game plan will be open app, waste a minute waiting for the timeout on my .world account and remember why and then switch to my .cafe account LMAO
Ah, it’s good to be King.
URL Blocking, at last. Now I can block all those AI shit websites on my communities :D
And being able to comment on locked post, what a nice QoL enhancement :D

Huh? How? I don’t see anything about this in the six linked changelogs.
In 0.19.4, section “Moderation enhancements”
In 0.19.4, section “Moderation enhancements”
But this is about admins being able to block URLs, not about mods of communities.
Admins and Mods have means to contact each others. If we have good reasons to block said website it will be blocked.
Hopefully this will improve the sync/federation process between LW and other instances, especially those further away geographically :)
Test
successful
Nice
Do you think you guys could do a post on the underlying hardware/infrastructure of .world? I would love to see what it takes to run the largest Lemmy instance lmao
in short form, we have HAproxy running on a hetzner cloud VM for Lemmy/Lemmy-UI, another HAproxy VM for the alt UIs, a VM for the alt UIs.
for the main LW box, which runs lemmy containers, lemmy-ui, pictrs and a database each for lemmy and pictrs, we have a physical box with an EPYC 7502P 32 core CPU, 128GB memory and NVMe SSDs.
Huh interesting thanks! I’m pleasantly surprised at how little the “cloud” is part of it.
Thought for sure it would be some flavor of cloud with a whole bunch of VMs or something like Kubernetes for scalability lol
I can sort the comments [ new/old etc] now! ( Jerboa).
congrats

Someone ELI5 why Lemmy is or isn’t ready for a Reddit Exodus.
Personally, I want it to be. Reddit censorship/shadowbans/deletes is outta control. Imo the problem lemmy has is on Desktop, since on Android there are some great apps like Boost that give it a Reddit-like end user experience, wheras Desktop experience in a browser is No equivalent of RES, or classic reddit. Opening images is very janky. I like RESs 'view images buttons, that untwirls all view image buttons. Using lemmy on desktop is a Chore. I can handle it. But I imagine its very much a bad taste and an impediment to a greater influx of average users.
Its about time we left reddit behind and make Desktop lemmy more welcoming. The times we’re in requires a trustable platform. Reddit ain’t it.
in my opinion it’s the login experience. selecting an instance is too confusing for the average user.
I think it’s just a matter of explaining instances in a clear and concise way. This isn’t a Lemmy-specific issue though - it’s a problem for all of the fediverse.
https://join-lemmy.org/instances says “You can access all content in the lemmyverse from any server, so it doesn’t matter which one you choose.”, but that still leaves some things unanswered.
It seems to have done a decent job of helping new users find a suitable server with a few simple questions though.
Lemmy is an alternative to Reddit, you can visit https://phtn.app/ to have a look at the content, and install an app using https://vger.app/settings/install.

https://old.lemmy.world/ has a “show images” feature
For me to rely on Lemmy for news, there needs to be a LOT more action. Right now Reddit can be my sole news source because of how many people are on there.
The problem can be seen when looking at Twitter/X and the exodus that has been happening there. Mastodon was touted as a Twitter alternative but the onboarding was so confusing due to being federated. People don’t want to be confused they want things simple. This is why BlueSky took off rather than Mastodon.
Anyone remember Diaspora?*
Decentralization is not a new idea, it’s just too confusing to the masses right now. While the Lemmy onboarding process is actually pretty good, picking an instance is a trip up (it was for me for a very long time and I’m tech-savvy). Until that part is solved centralized services will always have more migrating users sadly.

I hear ya, it wast a trip up for me necessarily, I just okayed thru it and it all worked somehow (basically I’m big dumb yes man and it worked out, lol), but i def recall the sign up was more involved due to those extra steps. A potential solution i can see happening is maybe a top youtuber like Linus or MKBHD could ease the pain of onboarding by making a digestible video that effectively goes viral due to their reach. Much like Linus vids on quitting windows for Linux or ditching Google services.
Congrats on the successful upgrade 🎉
I’m not a dev/programmer, but does the version number starting with a zero suggest that Lemmy is still in a pre-release state? Like alpha or beta or something? If so, what needs to happen before it gets to version 1.0? Just curious! From my layperson’s perspective, Lemmy runs great and I have no complaints about it, so I’m not sure what v.1.0 would look like. Or maybe it’s all internal stuff that I’ll never notice anyway?
You are right.
After 0.19.9 is said to be “1.0”
Oh cool! Thank you 👍
MAME (Arcade and various consoles/computers emulator) is at version 0.275 and it’s been developed since 1996. 😀
Wow 😆
It’s a bit of a shame we don’t see any significant new features in this release. Piefed seems to be developing at a much faster pace compared to Lemmy, which is a bit embarrassing tbh.
considering that we’re coming from 0.19.3, this does still introduce quite a few bigger changes for LW.

Ah, okay. Since you included an actual hyperlink I thought it was live/real.
Nice!
Good luck!
Looking forward to the webUI supporting defined thumbnails per post.
