What OS are you switching to? If it’s Windows, then stick with Thunderbird. I have yet to find a better alternative. If you’re switching to Linux, then there’s a whole mess of them to choose from.

I like Evolution and Kmail. Though not as lean as most suggestions in this thread, they are pretty feature-rich and I didn’t find either to be particularly resource hungry.

Switching to Linux from OSX and it seems between Claws and Thunderbird, I might keep TB and see how it fares on RAM.

      Thanks for the link.

Perhaps this is a Mac thing but Thunderbird on Mac was hitting ~45% on the CPU. Does it clog up on linux?

CPU isn’t too bad for me, but RAM is pretty bad, to the point that I don’t like leaving it open in the background.

I used to use Claws and it is pretty good if the lack of HTML support isn’t a problem for you, I can recommend it. I’m now using Thunderbird again (work uses HTML w/CSS emails) and I have the same issue as you, I don’t like leaving it open in the background because of the RAM issues. I ended up buying more RAM recently to prevent OOM crashes.

Thunderbird is pretty great on every platform. I’d use it if I didn’t use a free ProtonMail. Because of this, I use ElectronMail, which is pretty great for what it is.

I like TD a lot. But the resource hog no matter how I tweak may perhaps mean I upgrade my hardware.

FYI I’ve seen people on Lemmy express negative views about ProtonMail for supposedly being a honeypot, and for their support of Belarus & Hong Kong protesters.

I don’t use ProtonMail for anything illicit, but also I wonder to what extent ProtonMail could even be a honeypot. It’s all encrypted, open source, and hosted in Switzerland and a handful of other countries. I feel like it would take coordinated effort among several countries to get ahold of my emails and I’m not nearly important enough for this.

Neat. Seems claws is a popular choice.
