As you can see from the milestone/goals, cross-platform federation is still down the road, but very much on the list of to-dos.
Currently Lemmy is federating between instances running Lemmy. It will be federating further with platforms running on ActivityPub (like Mastodon) as it matures.
I just used the tweet from Evans to casually talk about federation, not as a deep dive on what it is all about.
