Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•How to deal with burnout on a burning planet
4·2 days agoEspecially in the US, whenever you go to a protest or in person event I think you should always assume that for every “version” of somebody that is there, there are 10 other people very much like them that just didn’t have the energy, physical capacity, mental headspace and/or they were working/too existentially exhausted from work.
From that perspective the raw amount of people that shows up is only a small window into a greater potential, which is always I think what the spirit of in person protest and events should be about anyways…
Otherwise why do them?

Climate@slrpnk.net•How Much Air Conditioning Usage Actually Prevents Heat Deaths?162·2 days agoYour understanding of what is driving Climate Change has been successfully focused entirely on a complex of guilt and shame within you about your own carbon footprint.
This is leading you to suggest that installing a lifesaving tool that takes up some energy is not worth the thousands and thousands of lives it saves during heatwaves.
Please stop denying your own humanity and the humanity of others and focus on fighting the actual drivers of Climate Change before you end up accidentally killing yourself just because you couldn’t live in a way that perfectly minimized your impact.
This is NOT a slippery slope we all should be obsessed with, it is not that slippery and there are far scarier slippery slopes all around us that should be getting our attention.
Ultimately being against AC is just another form of ecofascism hiding in the language of personal responsibility to obscure the responsibilities of capital, industry and society.

Climate@slrpnk.net•How Much Air Conditioning Usage Actually Prevents Heat Deaths?173·2 days agoThis is nonsense, your life is worth the carbon footprint of AC.
Install Air Conditioning NOW if you are even remotely at health risk, you don’t do anything for the world suffering in pain during a heatwave which if it doesn’t kill you may do permanent damage to your body.
You don’t have to use the AC but you DO need it, heatwaves without AC are terrifying please give yourself permission to treat your body kindly.
You aren’t the reason Climate Change is happening, put that burden down and keep only the self awareness and introspection part of that thought complex.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Alberta moves to stop data centres from using renewable energy
7·8 days agoShe sounds dumb as hell… but darn it oh shucks I am sold, she is wearing a good ole cowboy hat!
Yeah but you can also set it to copy your DCIM photos folder or whatever (if you want to backup files, make it a one way folder sync in the folder options in Syncthing), if Syncthing is limited it is because of Android’s filesystem limitations not Syncthing.
Also consider an option that uses termux if Syncthing doesn’t work such as this one that uses rsync and termux.
https://howtos.davidsebek.com/android-rsync-termux.html
^the above tutorial may look intimidating at first, but each step is explained very clearly
You can also use termux to install Syncthing and then take advantage of termux’s ability to work around Android file system limitations.
Use syncthing and just sync all your important folders!
On F-Droid app store use Syncthing-forked
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingfork/
There are probably other more wholistic and specific ways to do this with apps specifically designed for it, but Syncthing you can use for pretty much anything and any other internet connected device you have you can use Syncthing to share/backup files too.
You don’t even need internet to use Syncthing, it will work entirely over your local network if both devices are on the same network.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Bethesda Dev Says Cuts Were Rare Before Xbox Took Over: 'All Of A Sudden We Have Yearly Layoffs'English
5·13 days agobefore anyone says Microsoft/Xbox are idiots and are sabotaging themselves… yes they are but also this strategy is an extremely successful longterm strategy so long as you have enough money to survive the temporary collapse and can buy up large chunks of the industry during the downswing.
Eventually if you keep doing this then you own most of the industry and neither developers nor gamers have any choice but to accept the crap you serve them. Problem solved.

memes@lemmy.world•Lemmy be happy for the hate, happy to be here now
6·13 days agoNo, that is the healthiest/least draining thing to do, the militant and most effective thing to do is relentlessly shit on corporate social media with your old corpo account while moving the rest of your social identity to the fediverse.
Obnoxiously link to the fediverse, talk about it unprompted, strip mine the relevance of your posts to the algorithm before you leave.
I am not saying everyone has to do this, I am not even necessarily recommending it as a general suggestion but this is clearly the best way to hate on billionaire social media and fight back against it. If you have the energy, don’t throw away the value of your social connections to the corpo algorithm without first converting as much as possible of it to awareness of the fediverse and how shitty corpo social media is, if your objective is to fight as hard as possible.
edit corporate social media is toxic as hell, I make this point not as a judgement of people who just log out and never log back in to corporate social media, take care of yourself, this strategy is for if you have the mental headspace to do it.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Isn't it supposed to be an el nino year this year?
7·15 days agoUnfortunately no the extreme weather conditions right now are not really a product of El Nino, I mean they are to a degree but we have only fairly recently actually moved into an El Nino proper… what they are is a product of much more worrying extreme global sea surface temperatures that have dominated for the last several years.
https://climatereanalyzer.org/clim/sst_daily/

To put it another way, the big swing in chaotic weather frequency and shifts of zones of precipitation and dry zones we are experiencing right now is a much more monumental signal that El Nino will graft onto in ways that… well we aren’t really sure what ways that this interaction will happen…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone actually prefer Android over iOS?
1·15 days agoYes but part of the selling point a lot of the time does perversely come back to US-centric companies providing the leaders of Governments and Corporations a Backdoor-As-A-Service product to force upon those lower down in the pecking order.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone actually prefer Android over iOS?
4·15 days agoI hate Android with a bloodcurdling passion but yes.
Apple has the most condescending design philosophy I know of and I will never tolerate the degree of suffocation Apple imposes on devices you have purchased and own.
Also Android has F-Droid which makes Android categorically superior to iOS.
Get all of your core basic apps like flashlight apps, image gallery apps, file browser apps etc… from F-Droid.
Samsung? I hate samsung and yet I have an older used flagship samsung phone and ultimately that is what I recommend doing with Android, always buy near top of the line phones (samsung or otherwise), just go used and older until you hit a price point you are comfortable with. This reduces the headaches you will run into with Android a lot since you are always getting the experience Android was meant to give and that designers focused on especially when it comes to the hardware and camera + camera app.
I recommend Swappa for buying used electronics/phones since the website is dedicated to only those kinds of sales and provides a lot of confidence and comfort vs. buying off a random ebay seller.
edit ALSO on Android you can change your launcher/homescreen, the idea that you can’t do this on iOS blows my mind even though it doesn’t surprise me…

111·16 days agoWhere I draw the line for whether it is ethical to light things on fire is when they start destroying rare knowledge and books as fast as possible for no other reason than to hoard and obscure knowledge for private benefit.
It is one thing to fund the creation of knowledge and then hoard it, it is entirely another to begin actively attacking and destroying pre-existing publicly shared resources of knowledge in the pursuit of monetizing access to that very knowledge behind a gargantuan profit motivated entity.

841·19 days agoI fucking hate business majors, get them the hell out of video game development.
You can’t run a videogame company if you think like a business suit.

This is a feature not a bug for massive corporations, do not fall into the trap of thinking that because the collapse these corporations cause hurts the corporations themselves it means that in the end the wasteland left behind that they can consolidate and buy up isn’t beneficial for them.
