just confirmed my point

Or maybe you’re so used to posting on a platform that’s bad to hold a conversation on you don’t notice when you’re part of one on a platform that is good at being conversational on.

You don’t really pay much attention do you Mr “look for the signal”?

I’ll save you the time: “It’s just conjecture”.

The blog style format (post + threaded comments) is a lot more inviting to a conversational style than microblogging. Some Masto instances have very open post character counts but some are much more limiting - as are Bluesky and Xitter. If you’re not able to explain your point clearly it hampers the ability to have a decent conversation about it.

I’ll see your Star Trek and raise you The Culture.

Because claiming they don’t is not the same as being able to verify they don’t by making their code open source.

It’s ridiculously expensive. It’s not private if you have to link your searches to a paid account and none of those payment providers are private. They don’t seem to have open sourced any of their key functionality, meaning you have to trust them to not be collecting your activity data.

I spent a long time getting rid of software and using services that I either no longer trusted or was unable to make an informed choice due to their lack of open source code and I’m not going to take a retrograde step now. And that’s without the issue with their choice (a continued choice I believe) to use Brave results, a company I’m personally not prepared to support.

I realise that as individuals without the huge resources of a business your options are limited. I also have a lot of sympathy with the admins and mods being exposed to that shit. I don’t know what the answer is but I don’t think blanket silencing all users who care about their privacy is a solution.

I’m only part way through the 3rd one but I have to agree. This third one in particular just seems like - how much shit can we pile on this lad before he breaks? It’s part of the reason I’m so confused about Kettricken’s anger at him. Yes, he’s been an idiot at times but he literally saved her life more than once. What’s she so angry about?
