Canada@lemmy.ca•Russia and U.S. amplifying Alberta separatist narratives to stoke division, distrust: report
2·7 days agoQuebec actually had a solid plan for post-separation during their referendum. They had their act together much better than the Alberta separatists. But back then, it was not an issue of America, Russia, or China interfering, it was outright flagrant and in-your-face interference by De Gaulle.

Canada@lemmy.ca•AI systems used by Ontario doctors hallucinate, auditor general finds
5·8 days ago‘The auditor general said artificial intelligence had helped with editing and “supporting” her reports — but that they were “by no means written by AI.”’
So the report criticizing AI was in part processed by AI.
But I wonder what the medical qualifications of the auditor general are? It seems to me such a report should be written by someone who brings a strong medical perspective to the issues.

1·10 days agoWhat was implied just after that was that he had absolutely no skills or experience in construction. Seems he is looking in the wrong place. Best bet for him is probably Community College skills upgrading.

Canada@lemmy.ca•‘Not a single one’: After 100 applications, a 28-year-old still can’t find work
22·11 days agoA degree does NOT necessarily qualify you. A BA in Psychology is not marketable, for instance.
You go to Community College to get a job, you go to University to get an education, There is a VERY big difference between the two.

Canada@lemmy.ca•‘Not a single one’: After 100 applications, a 28-year-old still can’t find work
148·11 days ago“For a couple of years, Mahmoudian worked as a home energy advisor — a self-contractor who says he used to put in 70-hour weeks. However, most of the government incentives that sustained that work, including the Canada Greener Homes Loan program, have ended, and business has dried up”
That paragraph says an awful lot, if you read what is NOT said. Reads like he made his money in the past by sweet talking people into applying for government handouts. Government money dried up, and he has no skills to work at a ‘real’ job.
I really think they picked the wrong person to highlight in the article to make their point.

I can’t even imagine the charger that would be needed.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Ford defends jail expansion plan to address overcrowding issues
3·1 month agoJails are expensive. A new one with 375 beds under construction in Thunder Bay, Ont., comes with a price tag of $1.2 billion.
That’s $3,200,000 per inmate.
Maybe we SHOULD build hotels for low-risk inmates instead of these prison cells. A 40 story hotel. How are they going to escape from the 20th floor? That is a very long knotted bed sheet rope. Link 4 together, as a horizontal evacuation route, in case of fire or such. No need to evacuate down to ground level.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada in the European Union? Poll suggests broad openness to the idea
5·1 month agoThe BNA act that formed the political entity called Canada was an Act of the British Parliament. It was so up until Trudeau Sr. brought the constitution back to Canada. Parts of what is now called Canada was founded originally by the French, other parts by the British, some allegedly by the Vikings, another part by the Knights Templar and even the Spaniards (if you follow such things as the Curse of Oak Island), but mostly it was the indigenous peoples that first populated Canada.
But nevertheless France and Spain are also part of the EU.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada in the European Union? Poll suggests broad openness to the idea
1·1 month agoActually, the benefit of it was that our ‘constitution’ was governed by the British in the BNA act, and it formed the basis of English-French (Quebec) debate, up until Trudeau Sr. brought the constitution back to Canada. THAT era made for some lively some political intrigue. Until then, Quebec could only seek ‘constitutional’ change through an Act of the British Parliament.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada in the European Union? Poll suggests broad openness to the idea
5·1 month agoAfter all, Canada started as a British colony. The European roots go deep.
Interestingly, if this was the early 1900’s, Canada could have been caught up in the entire Brexit thing. As went Britain, so went Canada, at the time.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Floor-crossing Liberal MP downplays reports of forced labour in China
1·2 months agoThe really interesting part of this is what was NOT said.
The Chinese EV’s coming over to Canada are arguably far superior to anything made by an American company, so they can not argue against these vehicles based on merit and quality, they have to use inflammatory anti-Chinese rhetoric to argue they should not be brought over.
When China bought controlling interest in Ford International (it was the money from this sale that kept Ford America solvent) er, and Tesla built his mega-plant in China, the detailed knowledge behind the patents on these EV’s went with them. In the case of Ford, the actual patent rights came with the sale. The Chinese improved on this knowledge. The irony is that now. when the Chinese vehicles come to Canada, the knowledge behind the patents also comes with them.
And then there is Cuba. Conundrum after conundrum. Oh for the good old days when you could tell the bad guys from the good without a playlist.
Wait, in the ‘good old days’, there was Vietnam.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Floor-crossing Liberal MP downplays reports of forced labour in China
1·2 months agoPolitics is politics. To understand the questioning, it must be understood that this witness was NOT selected as an unbiased witness, but was selected specifically BECAUSE of her bias towards the issue, and towards China. She was an assistant deputy minister, which basically means an unelected politician specifically indoctrinated in the policies of the political party in power at the time. Her position was well understood long before she took the stand. There was no hope of getting any unbiased neutral ‘facts’ from her from the get-go.

1·2 months agoUnfortunately, I see this tactic used by the PC members quite frequently, so I can accept that it is a tactic that party promotes in their members. It is, unfortunately, extremely common in the House of our neighbors to the south of us.
I sympathize with you. There does not seem to be a vehicle for good communication between the two mods for this community, and looking at the mod logs (in red, very bottom of right hand column) it does not appear that the mods do any dialogue with posters before banning them or deleting their posts. Theoretically, if one of the mods has a particular bias, there is no way to address that bias in their mod actions. Should their communication with you be in a DM, or should it be in a public forum?

Kevin O’Leary? Is he still considered a Canadian? I thought he had pretty much sold his soul to America.
