Now do the same for generic/vacuous travelling pictures in a majority of womens’ dating profiles ;)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a food related action you'd consider wrong?
2·2 days agoMy parents grew up in the ruins of post WWII Germany, so that has certainly impacted their raising of me.
But even setting that aside, deliberately wasting food is a disrespect to all the life that needed to end for you to have it. Be it flora, fauna, or fungi.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a food related action you'd consider wrong?
5·3 days agoWasting it, if it can at all be avoided.
What’s there to lay out, other than what anyone can read from the Wikipedia entries?
The Internet is a specific global network of computer nodes that use some version of the Internet Protocol to communicate with each other. There are many different services over on it. The WWW is simply one such service.
Finally someone who at least knows the difference between the WWW and the Internet…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something that you want but can't justify to do / buy right now ?
7·4 days agoThe new Framework Desktop with 192GB unified memory, specifically for LLM inference. I’ve looked at the numbers and there’s no scenario for me in which it’s economically sensible to upgrade from 20GB gpu vram + rent EU API inference for larger models. Even if the tokens became more expensive by factor of 10 overnight, by the time the hardware paid for itself it would already long be obsolete.
It’s an impressive machine, but I just can’t justify the purchase.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Lemmy, what are some offline activities that bring you joy and help you unwind?
1·7 days agoSure! But it’s not particularly sophisticated. Other than staple recipes (like e.g. vegetables stews) I learned while growing up, when there’s a product I was previously dependent on buying ready-made that gets enshittified by the food industry so much I’m unwilling to pay the full asking price, I start looking into the recipe for it and experiment to calibrate quality, time efficiency, and material cost to the exact tradeoff I consider best for me. Frozen pizza vs self made pizza being one example.
My joy in cooking, aside from the above optimization process I find fun, comes from knowning I pay less money to eat a better quality (and almost always less unhealthy) meal than I’d otherwise be able to. Once I have a recipe dialed in, it also requires virtually no thinking to get done, which is the opposite of my daily work; that’s the “unwinding” for me. I can then also combine it with listening to some audiobook or TTRPG actual play / podcast.
Due to this depth-first approach my actual list of recipes isn’t incredibly large, but it’s enough to never get boring by now, at least.

Games@lemmy.world•Microsoft patent describes in-game advertising triggered by boss fights, loading screens, and cutscenesEnglish
7·14 days agoHow tf this even gets patented?
It hasn’t, yet, afaict. Applying for a patent != it being granted.
As to the latent question of why Microsoft seems confident enough to try:
Because the times of a patent requiring to clear a reasonable inventive threshold (to actually be a motor for innovation) are far behind us. These days, patents’ principal (not exclusive) purpose imho is so big corporations can sue each other to grab some of the others’ earnings.

Shhhh! We keep up that reputation deliberately so not even more people come here and worsen the housing crisis ;)
