To fight disinformation, you first have to know what disinformation is, and the people being activists don’t really care about how much of a hypocrite they are acting as or on what vague presumptions they are or aren’t acting on. My suggestion, do what Cambridge Analytica did and has continued to exist under Emerdata and competitors, but make the data collected and the inferred relations visible to all so that people can see their surrounding and other people’s surroundings and get a notion of how and why they might be getting affected by them. Instead, we have people arguing that keeping functionality already visible to admins, and easily subject to manipulation, but hidden to the rest of the users, like upvotes and downvotes, should be kept hidden in social networks supposedly intended to be more transparent. Not even going to bring up some of the people leading those networks. I have little hope.

awk is supposed to be simpler. If it isn’t, just use your favorite scripting language. It comes from a period of time when a lot of the scripting languages weren’t as easy to use or readily available.
Sun’s problem was competing with Linux, which it couldn’t. Nobody wants to pay premium for discount proprietary Linux. Sun’s Java, however, still exists. Microsoft’s browser is far from the norm. There’s more alternatives to popular software than ever, whether it be office suites, video editing, 3d modeling, 2d painting, you call it. No, they don’t compete with the industry leaders that have both stability and far more features, but they won’t die off.
Embrace, extend, and exploit is just something that’s being thrown around to see whether it will stick as an argument, and quite frankly, I already see the 3E’s from already existing lemmy instances whose entire approach to the lemmyverse is essentially that - not that it makes it more ok, just that it’s clear that people have other priorities when they throw the concept aroud.

I sort of disagree, abusive power mods / admins can ruin your interaction with any community, big and small. The only thing that varies is how much of an effect that they can have and whether you have the bad luck to get targeted by their small insecure egos.
VM adds too much overhead for anything near modern, even if modern VM integration does add GPU drivers that act as a bridge for 3D acceleration. But SteamOS and Steamdeck are great examples of how far gaming has come in Linux, it’s no longer something just on the fringe.
I sort of do agree with your last comment. I tried to introduce several family members, and their take was basically that, why bother with something that seemed as unfamiliar as Linux for something they were already used to using. And if you try to use it at work, you are going to have to end up installing a Windows VM most of the time for most jobs. Monopolies be like that.
I used to use Linux exclusively, but I eventually gave in to the appeal of Windows. I’m just too into gaming, even with all the advancements Steam and Proton are bringing into Linux. The main difference I’ve had is which OS type hosts which OS type.
You can already get it working under Linux, running a Windows VM. I remember doing that for Homeworld, it’s basically the emulator approach. A VM is ok if it isn’t too demanding graphically.

At least in Lemmy when admins are abusing their power, not only are the same options that were available in reddit here as well, but they can’t hide their trace because of federated propagation of the evidence. Unfortunately, the one thing that does seem to be a thing is that no one really cares (outside of the thread) when you out them, but reddit was becoming that as well.
Cortana and Microsoft Bing are going right out the window, Microsoft Edge will have to stay as a necessary evil to deal with moronically designed websites. Hear, hear!
