One million is life changing for a petty human, but the cost of doing business for a data center.
The fine should be much bigger, the generators should be confiscated and any executives that approved it should be in jail.
Fines do nothing. Blow up the data center.
Every bomb dropped on a data center is one less bomb for israel to drop on a Palestinian school.
Nothing says »AI will build a cleaner, smarter future« quite like powering it with 62 unpermitted gas generators next to homes and schools. Microsoft gets the compute, DataOne gets a $1.07 million fine, and the neighbors get the exhaust. 🤷
slapped with pocket chance
Yeah, a real slap in the face that is…
Not “slapped with”, more like “charged for”. Just the cost of doing business, The business of poisoning your community
It’s like fining Epstein $100.
$500 million dollar fine.
All C level execs caned for 100 strokes publicly. Top investors guillotined in public.
That’s how you make this stop.
The government doesn’t want it to stop, it’s in their interests to keep it going.
$1mil fine sends a message “polluting is fine as long as you cut us, your friendly government, in on the graft.”
That may be fheir interest. I only care about my own interest in this case. I want all this billionaire leniency and apologetics to stop immediately.
Frankly the entire business community is begging to be disciplined. This is beyond just the billionaires. The entire business community is drinking some tainted water and is off the chain.
I want so badly for an actual consumer and environmental agency to start laying down the law and shutting things down. I thought public opinion would reach the point of effecting change by now, but instead the sheep are just screaming “baaaaa” and the people who get it are vegging out to a YouTube video about how plastic is killing us or the risks of overfishing. Houseflies are less shortsighted and selfish than a distressing number of human beings. Props to the dedicated MVPs out there networking, shining a light on corruption, protesting environmental racism and classism, etc, especially the independent journalists.
The MVPs get to do what they do because there is enough buzz and energy going the same way in the trenches. You bet those MVPs are reading social media to check the temperature.
We are their environment.
No modern precedent in public awareness yet. Too much opposing precedent in praising and following wealth, power, faith, and confidence. Even if some judge DID push for something like this, and it DID take place, there would likely still be a MASSIVE violent social backlash. Not to say that’s not a good idea, because it is and that’s how you set precedence, but we either need to work our way there or you need somebody smart, powerful, and wise enough to do it without the resulting backlash ending up destructive to the goal of actually fixing it.
There’s no way it would be clean, but I guess we can all hope and just try to get through whatever happens. That’s evolution, eh?
Did you forget about Luigy?
Not only was there no backlash, the public was publicly celebrating. Also, United Healthcare was approving every claim for 6 months. Obviously this is the language of the Epstein class. They speak it and they understand it.
No, the public is ready. There is no problem with the public in this aspect at least.
This is the real tragedy of the modern data center. In the rush to be number one, they’ve captured the government at the top and use their influence to bypass environmental regulation and pollute at a grand scale just to save a dollar and some construction time. We could have had datacenters running on solar+batteries that could easily make money powering the grid as well, but no, we need to feed the oil machine and we let them run burner turbines unregulated. We could have had datacenters running closed-loop cooling, but no, we let them draw water directly for their cooling systems and dump it unfiltered back into the environment, further polluting it with heavy metals.
As long as one man desires to have more riches than another, this will never be solveable, I’m afraid. The shame.
Nothing but (temporal) confiscation of land and hardware would frighten them enough.
And loss of freedom through jail time and fines to the people personally in charge
“One two thousand pound bamb could blow up this whole data center.”
In Mississippi and Louisiana this is allowed as long as the nearby neighborhoods are poor and/or non-white.

It’s all just performative to make you think as if the government actually cares. The fine they receive is another kickback (bribe) for allowing the company to build the thing in the first place.
