As a teacher in machining / Industrial Engineering, and as a person that recently found stoic philosophy, I double love this post.
Why are they cutting external threads with a tap, I don’t even think that’s physically possible.
It’s a thread mill, not a tap, the grooves are horizontal. It technically is possible to cut an external thread with a tap.
Well TIL, not a machinist so I’ve only ever really used taps and dies.
I am, and I rarely can add anything to the conversation, so thanks for the opportunity.
Can you add a chamfer?
I once made worm gears using a M10x1 tap in a manual lathe.
You can also use a tap as a lathe threading tool if it’s got the tooth spacing you want, and the diameter is bigger than any of the dies you have
Real machinists will be sad with you if you do this
(Don’t blame me I saw This Old Tony do it)
It’s not, but it looks cool!
We all need equilibrium.
