That’s not a physical edition then. This is the reason, I am not buying consoles anymore. Too many day-one patches.

People have been getting the physical copy already, and as I understand it, the download along with patches is an unlock for the game.

Nothing new. The timeline for physical games being created is always several months prior to release using the final build at the time. The only confusing part seems to be that the game can be used offline until a new patch? If the system is not online at all how will it know a new patch exists? If the game checks in when booted then thats not offline either.
