I have to wonder, last time I checked Canada is a sovereign country, why can trump dictate who we can help and who we can not. My opinion: we should help the Cuban People as much as we can and give the Trumpsters the middle finger salute.

I agree but when the bully that gets away with everything makes a demand they should not be appeased. Personally I’d never want to do what they asked even just out of spite, but if taking a country into consideration then I see why concessions are made. It can only last so long though.

One of the best things we can do as a country right now is helpful acts like these.

These actions show the world Canada can be trusted for the leadership role being thrust upon us.

These random acts of kindness in the face of what’s going on show Trump and his masters that love beats everything.

You really shouldn’t be getting downvoted on this. Sending $8 million dollars & no fuel is basically just a PR stunt for the politically shallow. It is bullshit.

I expected the downvotes . Lemmy communities about specific country are always over protective of their countries. They can’t accept a single criticism like cultists. They looks like fools to me

They need a solution today, not in a few years. Today. The solution today is fuel, either via the blockade being ended or fuel aid being delivered. Canada is neither delivering fuel aid nor even calling out the blockade.

If the US succeeds in overthrowing their government, there’s a pretty good chance the electrification effort underway will be going in the bin.

Why smart? The goal is to get the oppressive communist regime of cuba to collapse, how is helping them going to get them further towards this goal?

Same with the UK not letting the US use bases against Iran, why are western governments pussy footing around with awful regimes that kill their own citizens?

In short: it is bad to help any regime do collective punishment on a group of people.

Can you cite the oppression? Because I have seen you get free medical school there and they have cancer treatments other countries don’t.

        Can you cite the oppression?

Why do I have to do all the work

Because I have seen you get free medical school there and they have cancer treatments other countries don’t.

By other countries do you mean America?

We also have access to free education: https://tafeqld.edu.au/courses/apply-and-enrol/subsidised-training/fee-free#courses

We also have universal healthcare https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_in_Australia

        They also can’t afford it

while historical allies such as Russia and China no longer offer unlimited financial support due to the island’s crushing public debt (108.6% of GDP) and deficit (about 17% at its peak), as well as its record of defaults on loan repayments.

        Can you cite the oppression?

        I did here: https://aussie.zone/post/30024551/21613626

        https://www.amnesty.org/en/location/americas/central-america-and-the-caribbean/cuba/report-cuba/

Sounds like Cubans have almost made up their mind and voted with their feet:

, one in four Cubans have left in four years

Most Cubans want change. But you cannot lead opposition inside Cuba because the regime jails any potential organiser

Thanks for links, I asked because you came across as knowing more than I.

The Cubans I have met didn’t talk very negatively about their homeland, just that the US embargo’s cripple their country and so life is harder than what they see in rich countries, and so wanted more.

We have some subsidized enrollment in Canada too, but in a communist system its not about subsidizing a for profit system by application approval, its about providing it to all as a service.

As for cancer treaments mine was head and neck cancer (all free in Canada) but it was old medicine techniques of blast and (hopefully) recover. Cuba with non profit pharmaceutical had come up with a “cure” for it but not available in USA or Canada because of the stupid politics and restrictions.

I’m not purporting they are a utopia, but I think USA media paints a dictator regime propaganda, while doing the exact same thing themselves.

Political scientists characterize the political system of Cuba as a single-party authoritarian regime where political opposition is not permitted.[12][13][14] There are elections, but they are not considered democratic.[15][16] According to the V-Dem Democracy Indices, Cuba is the second least democratic country in Latin America.[17] Censorship of information (including limits to internet access) is extensive,[18][19][20] and independent journalism is repressed in Cuba;[21] Reporters Without Borders has characterized Cuba as one of the worst countries in the world for press freedom.[22][23]

If this is the comment you meant, then its not really a good one, you are describing the current US ADMIN.
