A new study finds that men who are anxious about their masculinity are less likely to care about climate change. They may view environmental concern as a feminine trait that threatens their image.
for anyone in a tech-ish field, look into “i am not a maker”
it is about how part of the false binary of socially constructed gender norms is that men are builders, makers, and doers while women are nurturers, fixers, and maintainers. the aspects of living in a patriarchal society as the normalized hegemony lead to not only the arbitrary assignment of things to masculine or feminine identity, but also the de-emphasis of valuable traits that are assigned to the feminine identity.
as absurd as the findings in this article are, they’re actually not at all surprising once you start thinking about what we assign to the genders and how early this hegemonic programming begins. one of the things we have to be doing as we combat these forces in order to address the climate crises is to do more to listen to marginalized voices because this is not the only space or dimension in which completely illogical stances and approaches to the world have been normalized.
If you have daughters you’ll see how quickly they are drawn to dolls and babies. It’s before they can talk or have any kind of ‘programming’ instilled.
Not all woman and doesn’t mean they can’t build shit too though.
what does attraction have to do with thinking talking climate change is unmanly? also “i am not a maker” is about how to talk about feminism in tech. i was recommending it for other people who might be interested in the theory behind how we combat this in the workplace, not to people who need convincing that you need to listen to women in tech. how you convince people to listen to tech largely has to do with introducing consequences to men who treat women like they only exist as sexual objects for men to behold
attraction should not factor into any of this, ultimately. and in fact, if we want to get further into the weeds, one of the things we need to do, societally, is to make eco-consciousness fun. doing the right thing is sexy. it gives us better beaches to frolic on. it means people age better. it means there’s more variety of dance music to shake our asses to. but people are addicted to short term rewards instead of long term benefits
it is about what is. human beings are not worldly creatures who think of the greater good. they are tribalistic, emotional, and immediate gratification is their primary goal above all else.
your problem is you think human beings shouldn’t be human. you want them to attain a monk like enlightenment…

who is your favorite anthropologist, and why do you think they’ve been lying about human activities their whole career?

I mean it’s not completely arbitrary.

you realize talking like you do about this topic to any normal person will make them hate you instantly?
people don’t care if they are illogical. they care how they feel. attraction is about feelings, not logic.
