go open youtube in a private tab and see how long it takes for an innocuous video to get a recommended video from the manosphere, rightwingtube, or magaworld. youtube pushes nazi shit hard. if they’re not pushing it on you, it usually means their mathematical model for determining who right wing propaganda works best on indicates you’re not a good target, in which case they’ll mostly push meaningless drivel.

In the past the videos were always shit and people would thus shit on them in the comments/ratings, so it might be to hide how much shittier it’s getting. For example if there is so much generated content that it would take up a chunk of the video, or it might even be that they’ve fired the talent who normally create the rewinds and replaced them with AI, which would be fairly obvious to detect if it was used for this kind of thing because it probably would do a shit job. *If they are not producing them anymore.
To this day I still have no idea what it is, and I don’t wanna bother looking it up.
So they invite a select group of artists from the platform who made big gains that year to be a part of something like a YouTube holiday special.
The problem with it is corporate is so out of touch that in 2018 they invited mid-controversy Will Smith and a bunch of K-Pop stars to do the video, almost plays like their target audience is barely pubescent boys and girls. It became less about the community and more about promoting content for monetary purposes.
The YouTube Rewind videos are in the list of the most disliked videos of all time, with the 2018 Rewind being at 20 Million dislikes, surpassing “Baby Shark Dance” at just under 15 Million and “Justin Beiber - Baby” at 12 Million.
That was just about the time they got rid of public downvotes, unsurprisingly

I’ve been on YouTube from pretty much the start and have never seen a Rewind. Do only Americans get them?
They were a video published and produced by Youtube themselves, showing the most popular videos on the platform, making jokes, etc. It’s the same video for everyone. It’s not like the “rewinds” some companies do showing your activity for the year.
Here is 2013( I think this was the best one).
