FORUM OR SOCIALNETWORK? THIS IS THE QUESTION. YET THERE IS ALREADY A SOLUTION!
@fediverse
Indeed, a few days ago something was born that could create a revolutionary point of contact between these two tools for social comparison among web users…
This (very long) post from @informapirata tries to take stock of the situation.
#Lemmy #Friendica #Fediverse

@piratepost @informapirata I’m interested in Lemmy as an alternative to Reddit, but haven’t been able to figure out how to use it as such
@taur10 Lemmy is an excellent product and its communities are almost always very active.
To better explore the platform, I suggest you create an account on lemmy.ml because the interface is very well designed and it’s easier to navigate the communities from Lemmy than from Friendica.
But if you’re an experienced Friendica user, you’re even better off writing posts from Friendica.
In fact, with Friendica the integration is perfect and the mentions work even better.You might also want to check out the jerboa app on Google play (it is an app for browsing Lemmy that was made by one of the main Lemmy Devs)
I’m on jerboa. Yup, it looks and feels like reddit.
@taur10 @informapirata @piratepost Interesting. I’ve never found #Lemmy particularly difficult to use.
What part of it has been tripping you up?
@realcaseyrollins @informapirata @piratepost The way it works throws me, I’m used to Reddit, just look up what you’re interested in, and subscribe, something I can’t do as Lemmy is decentralized.
@taur10 @informapirata @piratepost What are you interested in? The question here is likely whether or not what your interested in has any communities yet.
I made a ton of communities in #Lotide, perhaps they might be more your speed?
The #Lotide instance I use is narwhal.city
@realcaseyrollins @informapirata @piratepost Let’s see, over on Reddit the ones I’m following that I check daily are:
Amazon of Deals
Canoo
Couriers of Reddit
Idiots in Cars
Kei Trucks
Roadie
RoadieApp
StLouisLikely I can find some or all of these, but they’ll be spread across servers, and that’s where I run into problems, how do I find stuff? I’d also like to find an alternative to my Flipboard, while I do use it as my main news source, I also use it to share all the news that interests me, so finding or creating an equivalent to my books over there’d be nice.
Not all of the communities you desire may be there (yet), but I recommend checking the Lemmy Community Browser that the good people at the Feddit instance have made.
@Peter1986C Oooo, neat, thanks.
And unfortunately nothing found for any of the topics I mentioned
LOL! I’m the admin of Kei trucks… got all my accounts banned from Reddit so I can’t even g tell anyone on there. I think we should start the forum here again.
@taur10 @informapirata @piratepost
Interesting…I’m not familiar with most of those communities. There seems to be a theme of travel and IDK of any #Lemmy or #Lotide communities that do that. “Amazon of Deals” is probably technically adjacent to @Finance or @Lifestyle.
But if you don’t see the community you’re looking for, you can always create it.
> Likely I can find some or all of these, but they’ll be spread across servers, and that’s where I run into problems, how do I find stuff?
The trick I always use on that corner of the #Fediverse is use the three most popular instances of each software and see if they have the community you’re looking for. The bigger the instance, the more likely they have a more complete view of the #Fediverse.
@realcaseyrollins @informapirata @piratepost Actually little of that is travel, STL is where I live, so that’s local news, chat, etc, Canoo is a brand of electric vehicle that might some day go into production, Roadie is a package delivery service app that I drive for, hence the two Roadie and one courier group. Amazon of Deals is just a deal finding group, any deals that you find on the web can be posted there, and Idiots is dash cam videos.
That’s where Lemmy loses me, I have no idea where to start looking, and some of these are oddball enough that likely I’ll have to find the right corner of the fediverse.
@taur10 WOW the city of the bow! Possibly the only man-made monument I would visit the USA for!
However, you are a Friendica user. If you want to follow the news of your city, you could follow the RSS feed of local news with Friendica.
Otherwise, the important thing is to find the communities you like and follow the subscribed communities page: lemmy.ml/communities/listing_t…
Finally, remember that with Lemmy you can only follow the communities, but with Friendica you can also follow individual Lemmy users!
@taur10 @realcaseyrollins @piratepost @informapirata Didn’t know about Lotide before. Thank you:)
@anders Lotide is a minimal software, but it is very efficient! Lemmy has reached a greater maturity, but the Lotide communities are certainly interesting.
In this regard, there is also another beautiful project that has just come out of the embryonic state: kbin.pub/en
This project also features a “microblog” section!
