That was always going to happen though, with or without fragmentation. Whether it’s netflix or gamepass or reddit or discord or bluesky or whatever the same enshittification playbook always applies if you’re trying to make a profit: offer a “good deal” until people have bought into your service enough to feel like they can’t do without it, and then start slaughtering the piggies.


The games have different settings so the amount of sci-fi differs, but a ton of fantasy JRPGs have “surprise” sci-fi element reveals at some point. Although the same goes for western RPGs too I guess; Ultima, Wizardry and Might & Magic all have their sci-fi moments.
As for suggestions, I was going to say the Gothic or Risen games, but there’s a fair amount of struggling involved in the beginning if you’re not into that, and the combat isn’t exactly incredible, so I’ll just second Avowed which is way more fun than I expected.
They only block some Mullvad servers, if I hit the change location button once or twice I always get through. At least on Swedish servers which I usually use.
