      Idiot starts with one of the sounds that E can produce. In the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), idiot is written “/ˈɪdiːət/”. If you say just the letter ‘E’, the sound you are making, in English, at least, is ‘ɪ’.

        I see. Never would have got that. But I am not a native speaker and I do think the way english spelling works is utterly moronic.

          Neither am I, but I’ve been studying English for long enough to feel pride in understanding this insulting language.
