mine is: youtube
i think we need to make some sort of system to make video sharing easier for servers without costing a fortune (that maybe impossible)
Check out peertube
Google Maps
I discovered recently there is an “Ungoogled Maps” patch available on Morphe. Obviously a fully open alternative would be better, but none of the alternatives I’ve found do public transport in the UK yet
Organic maps works well in many countries, you can improve its data in yours if it does not work as well
Medical equipment. The software for medical equipment is super arcane stuff, locked behind patents and licensing that only serves to drive the price up. For someone in a less economically powerful country the cost is increased and the quality of care is reduced massively by this licensing. If an open source version of the software for things like an MRI, CAT scanner, ultrasound, and so on could be made it would enable the updating of old hardware to keep it running longer and also make repairs much more affordable. I also think that internal defribulators would benefit enormously from being open source as under the current system they are hackable and can be exploited to wirelessly trigger a shock which can be fatal.
Also consider continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps. By combining those two technologies you can essentially make an artificial pancreas and make diabetes much more manageable. The hurdle here is not technological, it is legal. The thing that has slowed down the production of an artificial pancreas is software licensing and legal risk management, nothing technical. Consider this applied to the possibility of a continuous allergy monitoring device which could detect anaphylaxis and administer adrenaline, or maybe markers of a seizure approaching to trigger a much smaller dose of an anti epileptic medication. All unavailable because the development of that technology would not be feasible under the current licensing and liability system we have.
To be clear, I am not saying any of these cure the underlying condition, just that if medical software (and ideally hardware) was required to be open source more of these tools could be developed to help people live better lives independently and safely, and at a lower cost.
It already exists, it’s called Peertube
YouTube is about the video library, not the software. Tons of music industry licenses, copyright and abuse takedown system, etc. It needs tons of people and money, not just software and servers. I’d call it a bad example even. We do need open frontier level AI models. Ok, maybe we need them like a hole in the head, but that’s still a need lol.
YT operated at massive losses for years to build up hardware and capture the market, all while giving us the service for free. I have no idea how that could be replicated. Even if a generous multi-billionaire threw $20B at the project, how could it be sustained as it ever expands? A government could do it, but does anyone want a government run video platform? Yuck.
Also it’s almost impossible to stop the positive feedback loop of more users more content that leaves every other service behind
Governments
Cars.
Bike? Train? Bus?
Definitely YouTube but also…social media for Normie’s that isnt controlled by corpo/government.
Something as easy as Facebook that isnt fb. Its so damn tough to find. Theyre either super complex, dont have enough features, are glitchy, or the project went dead after 3 years.
I really want something I can move all my friends to who will listen but it has to be absolutely perfect or they will be gun shy and never trust me again.
Normie’s
No need for an apostrophe here.
I could never recommend this place to friends. It’s the buggiest site I know of, just from a browser on a PC. Then put in that I spent two weeks stamping out the furry porn and little girl porn (it’s anime!).
Oh No, Lemmy is not a fb replacement. I meant something like friendica or those MySpace recreations but none of them seem good.
Came here to say YouTube. Also because our doctor sent us videos regarding care for our recent pregnancy, so we unwillingly had Google know we were pregnant.
Also computer processors. RISC-V can’t advance fast enough.
Also ticketing. NFTs would actually be great for managing venue ticketing and someone needs to eat Ticketmaster’s lunch.
I’m surprised there’s no FOSS alternative that matches the feature set of SecureCRT. It’s the only choice IMO if you have to manage hundreds of devices over ssh. There are kludges on top of PuTTY that try to add things like saved sessions but they still don’t measure up.
