Comedy writers are incredibly smart people. It takes real brains to make something of sufficient absurdity that still manages to make enough sense to be a valid cultural commentary. The smartest man in the king’s court is the jester.
I dunno about that, I think any of the hard sciences have a lot of crossover with computing. It generally rewards the curious, patient and methodical.

I think I’ve read before that it was in fact the Silicon Valley environment that he disliked. Can’t blame him; it’s a toxic, incestuous little world.

He didn’t struggle to connect his degrees to computer science. He did not enjoy his work (struggled to connect to it) and is why he started messing with animation.
Yes, Silicon Valley is partly inspired by his life experience. Office Space far more so.
