This is from a regularly scheduled Everglades Bike Club weekend ride in Key Biscayne, USA, on a 10km stretch of road, and all the drivers know to expect it will be there in the mornings.

Is this an officially sanctioned event that has been authorized to take over a whole road?

If not, slower traffic should keep to the right. Share the road. Don’t be a dick. It’s not hard.

Edit: just realized where I am. This could have all been avoided with better public transportation. Fuck cars.

Edit #2: as a society we should absolutely be building public transportation and protected bike lanes. However, there are a shocking number of people talking about “entitled” this and “entitled” that and have no idea what the actual laws are for sharing the road using the current existing infrastructure in this video.

This video appears to be an asshole in a car passing some assholes on bicycles.

Florida Statute § 316.081(3): On a road, street, or highway having two or more lanes allowing movement in the same direction, a driver may not continue to operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that he or she is being overtaken in that lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed.

Florida Statute § 316.2065(5)(a): A person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing must ride in the bicycle lane or, if there is no bicycle lane on the roadway, as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway

Every cyclist in the left lane blocking the faster traffic should be written a ticket.

Unless they’ve gone through some kind of permitting process then they have no more moral ground than the street takeover assholes that go around shutting down roads to do donuts.

      THANK YOU.

If an evernt is not officially sanctioned ? In my opinion ANYRHING, AND I MEAN ANYTHING, can happen in there and I wouldnt care. Unless there are kids there? I dont care for anyone there. Sorry. If anyone wants to hold a. massive event that will DEFINITELY clog up a public road or area? Yooooo you better fucking get that bitch approved first. Like the only massive public event that doesnt need to be approved is a massive public violent protest … and thats it.

I remember watching this one video of a guy who crashed died during one of those unofficial ‘street takeover’ events and he ended killing a few other people there who were happily watching it and also clogging up that road and the comments were so sad for them…

      uhhhh…

I find it very hard to feel sad for adults who dont tell anyone that they will clog up the public areas that WE ALL PAY TAXES FOR, , intentionally clog up a road, drive their cars in circles at irrantionally dangerous speeds, race each other on unofficial race tracks , and then end up learning the valuable lesson that ‘Moving really quickly has never been a problem, its just the stopping really quickly.’

I’m surprised nobody in here commented that maybe there was an actual life or death emergency the car occupants were dealing with?

Like, fuck cars, but also maybe the driver had a real reason to do that. At least I feel like if you frame it that way it’s less infuriating. Who knows if that’s true but it makes me less mad to think that way.

It’s actually sad to see how many people are on the side of a beligerant driver going offload because of their road rage. Comments blaming the cyclists for being unpredictable, unsafe, or unfair to other drivers couldn’t be further from the truth.

Cycling safety courses teach that you should stay together when riding as a group. Those saying they should’ve closed the road down are basically saying drivers can’t be trusted to handle having cyclists on the road, hence why the group is so clustered for protection.

BS. I’m a cyclists and a driver. Cyclists 100% can be unpredictable, not follow rules, while demanding rule following from others. They are developing a bad reputation for a reason.

It’s not an absolute. But generally once someone starts dressing in lycra, they stop being a reasonable person. I will always cycle in street clothes. I don’t care how many miles I do. I will never become a MAMIL (middle aged male in lycra). Because I like cycling, but cycling culture is getting wack.

I think we are interpreting the driver’s actions differently. He is giving them a ton of space, not honking and bullying his way through the bicyclists. IDK about you, but I feel like a hero when there’s an obstruction justifying adv tires.

There was not an “obstruction,” there was traffic. Would you be equally charitable if the road ahead had been congested with cars moving at the same speed? Somehow, I doubt it.

Much more charitable, I regularly have to do similar manuvers on my motorbike to get around slow cars.

Actually I’d question why anyone would be bothered at all, at least with the bicycles, some people are afraid the driver will accidently veer across 15 feet of grass and drive into the bicyclists, which like I get it fear doesn’t have to be rational, but that’s not a safety concern if its other cars he was driving around.

You regularly offroad at high speed on a motorbike obviously not built for it, honking repeatedly while blasting over several pedestrian crossings, swerving all over the place?

Glad I don’t live near you.

Also of course it’s a fuckin safety issue if it’s cars too. You know what happens if you swerve into the side of a car? Nothing good ! Let alone one driving in tight packed formation with dozens of other cars

Where I live this is reckless endangerment and isn’t a “points on your licence” type infraction, it’s immediate “no more licence” and your car confiscated. As it should be.

And yes, this isn’t where I live. There are reasons I would never move to Florida.

motorbike obviously not built for it

You don’t need a purpose-built vehicle to drive on some grass, though the mini’s open diff honestly surprised me he didn’t have difficulty when there was 1 wheel on the pavement and 1 wheel on grass. Clearly the suspension is soft enough/has enough travel the designers considered the possibility that the car might not be on good roads.

My bike isn’t a dirtbike, but has adv tires instead of streets because of how frequently I have to ride offroad or on gravel roads or w/e.

              honking repeatedly

Its usually a quick beep to let the person I am passing know where I am, I got hit when I didn’t do that last year and someone in the righthand lane decided to take an exit on the left as I was passing.

You know what happens if you swerve into the side of a car

Yes, at the speeds involved you get a small dent, maybe some scratched paint.

Where I live this is reckless endangerment

Who was in danger? The people 15 feet away from the car?

There are reasons I would never move to Florida.

I would never move back, but there are some things I miss.

Going offload to get around a road obstruction in a controlled manner is fine by me. The video that OP uploaded was not this though. They were trying to get around a large group of people legally using the road by running through several pedestrian crossings, using the median to pass, and honking as they did (turn on the audio in the video).

This is just straight up road rage.

This is a divided highway with a speed limit of 45mph, those aren’t pedestrian crossings.

The beeping was “hey I’m here” beeping, not sustained “fuck you” honking.

I have learned to give a quick “hey I’m over here” beep when passing in the countryside after a motorbike pulled to the right and slowed down to let me pass, then suddenly swerved across the entire road, no indicator, directly in front of my bike.

There’s definitely pedestrian crossings involved here.

Regardless, this driver is obviously breaking dozens of traffic laws just to pass a group of people that are maybe going below the speed limit. If you don’t see the issue with that then I don’t think we really need to continue this conversation.

ALSO breaking traffic laws in a laughably weak bicycle is NOTHING compared to the damage that a person could do when breaking traffic laws in a over 2 tonne metal death machine. Bruh a persom could easily kill like 40 people in 20 minutes if they broke every traffic law while driving inside it… OK now lets see how many people thst same person would kill if they broke every traffic law while riding on a bicycle … 🍿🤭

Look, the roads are a public space that can have unlicensed and vulnerable users present, even people who are not in their right mind. Licensed drivers have to be willing to tolerate that and deal with it in safe ways.

The car going through the grass is a distraction. It shouldnt even be a talking point in this video.

What should be the talking point is a bunch of MAMIL’s feeling like they are entitled to an entire roadway, when they could easily coexist by keeping right and leaving the other lane open.

Which should be the actual focus of this story.

I used to do that during stop and go traffic, after I saw a couple semis doing it. If you can gauge the average speed of traffic and smooth out the irregularities, everyone gets there at the same time, but we all have a much more relaxed drive.

Now I ride a motorcycle so I can simply go around/between traffic.

Jesus christ, the amount of hysterical overreaction and rage in response to daring to suggest the cyclists should keep right and not block everything for everyone, like slow traffic is supposed to do, is patently ridiculous.

The group cycling standrad is every 2 together, and at the end a relay protection car behind the whole group. Even if they were 60 or 100 they can still ride in 2s and only take 1 side of the road.

Also, ffs these twats ware doing it for sports… go to a gym, jerk off at home, or block 1 lane , or 2 at worst if the road allows it. Why block the whole road… shit like this is not even acceptable in protests let alone wankers in expensive carbon-fiber rides playing a hobby or sport games.

Don’t be a lead huffer. Cars never give way to cyclists in such a manner, no matter how slow their traffic, nor would they ever be expected to. Just like much of the rest of the country, cyclists are every bit as entitled to a safe and full lane as any other road user and nobody except an emergency responder should ever feel entitled to others moving out of their way.

It doesn’t matter if cars give way to 2 wheelers because we can simply go around them. Though in the US its not terribly uncommon for crab-bucket brained drivers to try to block bikes from filtering at red lights.

That driver is obviously an idiot that needs his license revoked.

That said, as a fellow cyclist, you all need to do better as well. For this large an event, there should either be a road closure, or break it up into flights. If those aren’t feasible, restrict yourselves to one lane instead of taking up both. Not excusing the drivers carelessness at all, but judging from your reaction to other comments here, your ride group’s sense of entitlement is a problem as well.

Never seen so much “As a cyclist” in one thread. Almost everyone is a cyclist at some point even if you don’t like them, they’re ubiquitous and useful, but most people never seem to speak “As a cyclist” until they need to throw an anti-cyclist opinion at a group ride. It’s like saying “As a pedestrian”. It doesn’t give your uncritical social grudges any further weight. One second, maybe I can find an honorary cyclist medal to pin on you or something to make it official.

I commented to provide a balanced perspective on the situation, rather than just shake my fist at the stupid driver. Guess I should have known not to bother here. I don’t bother arguing with folks on the internet, so this’ll likely be my last post here. Enjoy your echo chamber.

No idea why that’s necessary. This is quite common in my country.

Allowed by law here, if you take certain precautions. Judging from the motorcycle, it seems this group also took precautions to keep the group safe.

I don’t have a dog in this race, so not really complaining about anything. I’m just pointing out that regardless of what’s legal, this is a failure of both safety and courtesy. Slower traffic stay to one side, let others go by.

The WHOLE conflict here is caused by entitlement. The cyclists think they are entitled to the whole road, through force of numbers, herd mentality, or whatever. The car feels entitled to drive how ever fast he wants and safety be damned. The car is obviously MORE in the wrong, but the whole situation could have been avoided.

Sounds like you do indeed have a dog in this race. It’s crazy how cyclists can use the road in complete accordance of the law and be called entitled when a car is made to slow down behind them for a few minutes. No law is being broken here, the cyclists are in fact taking the full lane, as driver training and regulation suggest that they should. It’s for their own protection since, as you can see, Florida motorists can be complete psychopaths.

Seeing how wide the road is, there’s no reason to block the whole road in one direction. This doesn’t seem to be a competition, just a casual ride. Block a single lane then.

Is it the highest throughout actually? Density sure, but lower density of people (in a car) per area or length of road at higher speed is still a higher throughout. Fast roads absolutely have a high throughout. Even during heavy traffic you often still go faster than bikes and the whole road is packed with cars at that point.

So… is it actually the highest throughout?

Bikes are not replacing cars 1:1, we instead need shorter distances etc. and reduce the required throughout to begin with.

Let’s say they go around 1/4th of the speed limit (they go faster than that for sure) and let’s say a car on this road is occupied by 2 people on average (which is generous).

To get the same throughput with cars, you need to put one car on the road (with safety distances) for every eight cyclists. No way that’s feasible in this example.

Know what solves this. Protected bike infrastructure that segregates car and cycling traffic. You all are making good points on both sides. But if the two types of traffic never interact this becomes a non-issue.

Even with segregated bike lanes these people will still drive on the road. There have been many times people drove their cars into groups of them where I live because of frustration. (I live in Western Europe where there’s great bicycle infrastructure). So yeah, as long as they drive where they are supposed to drive it’s fine, but it doesn’t magically solves it.

Can I ask? Where you live are the bike paths “lanes” or are they “physically” protected from car traffic? Do cars have to knock down steel bollards and jump concrete barricades to enter bike lanes or is it some paint and the honor system? Because if it’s the latter I’m not surprised at all. And if they are protected I’m wondering about the failure points or if people are just jacking up their cars to save five minutes? I’m genuinely curious - please let me know.

Said western Europe. So probably proper bike lanes. I live in western Europe, Spain specifically. There’s the road, then a steel railing, then the river-like trench along the road, and then the bike lane.

The bike lane is completely empty, there’s 3-4 “cyclists” in Lycra using the road.

Because real cyclists use the road and wear lycra. The bike lane is for the noobs.

Actual cyclists that use the bike lane to move from one town to the other do use the bike lane and don’t use Lycra though. They’re probably the butt of the joke for the lycra dudes, because they didn’t even pay 10k€ for there bikes, most probably it was just 300€ for the bike lane-capable bike.

Indeed, why should they? The rules of the road where made expressly for cars, not bikes, and there are several states which sensibly make carve outs for bicycles and motorcycles.

But, as you point out, the risk for breaking the rules–real or perceived–fall entirely on the cyclist, so I absolutely see no equivalence.
